Cleared Senior/Principal E&O Systems Engineer Tonopah, Onsite

Sandia National Laboratories is a premier science and engineering laboratory focused on national security. We are seeking a Systems Engineer to lead and work with a dynamic group of field test support and technical personnel to ensure successful completion of flight test missions at the Tonopah Test Range (TTR).

Job Summary

As a member of the TTR Range Team, you will coordinate, plan, organize, and execute flight test related events, working closely with the Operations Lead and Range Manager. You will follow established range processes and procedures to ensure safety, security, and compliance requirements related to mission systems, technical interfaces, and infrastructure are met with quality and reliability.

Responsibilities
  • Documenting and tracking range readiness and system performance status; developing preventive and corrective processes for range operations.
  • Planning, organizing, and tracking projects, documentation, training, and event preparation activities, and communicating progress to the Range Manager and Operations Lead.
  • Identifying and documenting project risks and collaborating with stakeholders to develop mitigation and contingency plans.
  • Leading, mentoring, and organizing a diverse group of personnel into a cohesive team, reporting to the Operations Lead and Range Manager.
  • Engaging with other functional leads and O&M sub‑contractor to build collaborative plans supporting the mission of the range.
  • Interfacing with internal and external stakeholders to develop, sustain, and integrate systems and processes that meet customer requirements.
  • Working effectively in a high‑stress environment with competing priorities to meet tight deadlines.
  • Developing and delivering a variety of presentations, proposals, and reports.
Qualifications We Require
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience.
  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent to start.
Qualifications We Desire
  • Graduate degree in a relevant field.
  • Thorough understanding of range operations processes.
  • Proven ability to translate customer requirements into actionable tasks supporting range mission objectives.
  • In‑depth knowledge of TTR range operations and systems integration to ensure successful fulfillment of testing requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including effective communication, delegation, teamwork, negotiation, conflict resolution, and coaching/mentoring abilities.
  • Demonstrated expertise in designing, planning, and executing large‑scale, complex work efforts.
  • Proficiency with systems engineering tools and methodologies, including requirements management and risk analysis.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation and data collection systems used in flight test operations.
  • Experience managing complex projects, including scheduling and resource coordination.
  • Knowledge of safety, security, and regulatory compliance standards relevant to test range operations.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with external agencies and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to adapt and problem‑solve in a dynamic, high‑pressure environment with competing priorities.
Location and Work Environment

This position is located at the Tonopah Test Range (TTR), near Tonopah, NV. The normal work week runs Tuesday through Thursday, 13–14 hours a day (on site 3 days/2 nights). Deviations may require personnel to remain away from home 4 days and 3 nights or longer. Some out‑of‑state travel up to 10% is required.

Salary Range

$97,500 – $190,200

* Salary range is estimated and will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or an equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency. Sandia requires a pre‑employment drug test and background review. Applicants must maintain a DOE Q‑level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If selected for an on‑site interview, additional steps may be necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
