The Senior Tax Manager will be a critical financial leader tasked with architecting, establishing, and executing a multi-phase transition to migrate the corporate tax function from an outsourced public accounting model to an automated, in-house operational team.
This position requires an leader who blends high-level technical tax expertise with the operational grit needed to implement infrastructure from the ground up. The ideal candidate will take immediate ownership of multi-state regulatory complexities, corporate income tax provisions, and fuel/excise/sales tax compliance, significantly reducing third-party reliance while ensuring absolute compliance across a high-volume, multi-jurisdictional environment.
Responsibilities- Lead the multi-phase roadmap to migrate operational tax functions from external CPA firms internally, establishing transition timelines and resource plans to prevent compliance gaps.
- Select, deploy, and configure enterprise tax software capable of managing high-volume transactions across more than 30 distinct state and local jurisdictions.
- Direct and review the timely filing of all Federal, State, and local corporate income and franchise tax returns across the expanding 30-state footprint.
- Oversee secondary, high-volume industry streams including motor fuel excise, sales/use, and environmental tax allocations while monitoring physical and economic nexus rules.
- Own the end-to-end quarterly and year-end corporate tax provision calculations, managing deferred tax assets, liabilities, and valuation allowances.
- Recruit, train, and scale an internal tax team from inception, establishing structured technical paths to upskill staff in multi-state compliance, specialized energy excise taxes, and new software systems.
- Maintain total accountability for tax balance sheet reconciliations against the general ledger while establishing robust internal controls to align with financial reporting standards.
- Formulate optimization strategies to minimize the Effective Tax Rate (ETR) and perform structured scenario modeling for legislative shifts, acquisitions, and new entity formations.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a quantitative field (Master's in Taxation or JD is a plus).
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
- 8+ years of progressive corporate tax experience, blending public accounting leadership with multi-state corporate practice.
- Deep understanding of multi-state corporate nexus laws and allocation/apportionment models.
