job summary

this position serves as a computer forensic examiner in the attorney general's investigation division. The position performs criminal investigations and analysis involving a variety of highly specialized forensic examinations performed on electronic devices or networks that can be programmed or can store or convey information in any form that is used in suspected criminal violations of state and/or federal laws pertaining to a specific program or regulatory area which includes, but is not limited to, medicaid fraud, workers' compensation fraud, consumer protection, public integrity, human trafficking, missing children, financial fraud, alleged criminal offenses committed by state officers or employees, internet crimes against children, terrorism, drug crimes, identity theft, crimes against persons or property, and all types of conflict of interest cases submitted by outside agencies.

Attorney general computer forensic examiners are primarily assigned to casework involving a subject's use of cyberspace, cloud storage, computers, or mobile devices to carry out criminal activity. Computer forensic examiners receive extensive training and are required to conduct forensic analysis of computers, mobile devices, cloud storage, and other smart devices. Computer forensic examiners are assigned casework as a supporting role for casework specific to technology, in support of other lead investigators.

Investigative support work generally revolves around forensic analysis of digital devices or cloud data recovered during investigations. Casework generally includes capturing and analyzing both physical and digital evidence using legally accepted tools and techniques. Capturing and analyzing evidence includes appropriate documentation of procedures, analysis and findings, and presentation in a court of law. In addition, computer forensic examiners work in conjunction with various task forces throughout the state with an emphasis on casework involving the use of technology, cyberspace, cloud storage, computers, or mobile devices to carry out criminal activity.

information technology (it) professionals analyze, develop, implement, maintain, and modify computer operations, systems, networks, databases, applications, and/or information security. Incumbents may perform duties in one or more it specialization areas depending on the needs of the agency.

essential qualifications

bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in computer science, management information systems, or closely related field and two years of professional it experience relevant to the duties of the position which may include computer operations, systems administration, network administration, database administration, applications analysis and development, and/or information security; or two years of experience as an it professional i in nevada state service;

or four years of relevant technical experience as an it technician iv or above in nevada state service; or an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

  • conduct detailed alternative analyses and determine end-user requirements through consultation with end-users, technicians, vendors, management, and others.
  • maintain documentation related to the assigned it specialization’s architecture, operations, and other records of work activities as required.
  • maintain current knowledge of technological trends and advancements in the it field as well as security management practices, laws, policies, and ethics.
  • participate in recommending and justifying resource allocations and expenditure decisions, tracking, and recording expenditures, preparing purchase requests, and writing technical requirements for grant proposals.
  • perform related duties as assigned.
  • under general supervision, incumbents perform journey level duties and may serve as a lead worker to lower-level it staff as assigned. This is a supervisory level for the computer operations function.
