Position: CHIEF DEPUTY PUBLIC DEFENDER
Job Title:

Chief Deputy Public Defender

The Clark County Special Public Defender's Office is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Chief Deputy Public Defender. This attorney will work in a collaborative team environment, providing zealous legal representation to individuals charged with category A felonies such as capital murder, murder, and sexual assault. The role may include serving as Team Chief, supervising attorneys and support staff.

Qualifications: Possession of a Nevada Bar admission certificate and eligibility to practice law in Nevada, with either:

  • Eight (8) years of professional legal experience, including four (4) years as a practicing attorney, OR
  • Five (5) years as a Deputy Public Defender in Clark County's Public Defender or Special Public Defender's Offices.

    Other Requirements:

    • Successful completion of a background investigation is required; periodic checks may occur during employment.
    • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. Clark County does not sponsor H1B visas.
    • Employment is contingent upon passing a pre-employment drug test.

    Job Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and review case preparation for hearings and trials, ensuring quality legal services.
  • Supervise and train attorneys; assign cases; evaluate staff performance.
  • Provide legal advice in areas of expertise; oversee cases and team members.
  • Handle complex cases, including family defense, felony, capital murder, juvenile, and dependency cases, often high-profile or sensitive.
  • Negotiate case dispositions; conduct legal research; interpret laws and court decisions.
  • Draft legal documents, correspondence, and reports.
  • Contribute to team efficiency; maintain accurate records; use standard office equipment.
  • May require driving to off-site locations for legal proceedings or meetings.
  • Physical and sensory requirements include mobility in an office setting, visual and auditory acuity, and speech clarity. Accommodations are available for qualified individuals upon request.
