Position: INVESTIGATOR I/II - PUBLIC DEFENDER

About the Position

The Clark County Office of the Special Public Defender is seeking qualified candidates to apply for the Investigator I/II-Public Defender position. As a member of our defense team, an Investigator performs legal and field investigative work in support of attorneys representing clients in criminal matters. Responsibilities include locating and interviewing witnesses, gathering and analyzing records and evidence, identifying investigative leads, conducting independent investigations, serving subpoenas and court documents, preparing detailed reports, and testifying in court as needed.

The Investigator works closely with attorneys and other defense team members and reports to supervisory investigative staff within the Office of the Special Public Defender.

Compensation

Investigator I (Public Defender): $28.15 - $41.52 hourly

Investigator II (Public Defender): $30.38 - $44.84 hourly

Training and Career Path

The Investigator I position is a training underfill. Upon successful completion of the training program, the successful candidate will be non‑competitively promoted to Investigator II. This examination will establish an open competitive eligibility list to fill current and/or future vacancies that may occur within the next six (6) months at either level or may be extended as needed by Human Resources.

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience:
Investigator I (Public Defender) – Equivalent to an Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Social Science, Social Work, or a related field AND two (2) years of full‑time experience in performing investigations or in sworn law‑enforcement duties.
Investigator II (Public Defender) – In addition to the above, one (1) year of full‑time experience in performing criminal investigations in a public agency.

Licensing and Certification: Must possess a valid Nevada Class C Driver’s License at time of appointment.

Background Investigation: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. Periodically after employment background investigations may be conducted.

Citizenship: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Clark County does not provide H1B visa sponsor ships or transfers for any employment positions.

Medical Examination: Employment is contingent upon the results of a physical examination performed by our examining physician.

Pre‑Employment Drug Testing: Employment is contingent upon the results of a pre‑employment drug examination.

Examples of Duties
  • Discovers the location of witnesses and other persons involved in various legal situations by using various tracing methods such as contacting law enforcement agencies, utilities, credit services, other governmental agencies, friends and family members.
  • Takes statements from victims, witnesses, defendants and others connected to a specific case.
  • Requests, receives and reviews information regarding law enforcement investigations, including laboratory data, police reports, photographs and other materials pertinent to cases being investigated.
  • Analyzes reports to identify relevant legal issues.
  • Locates and serves subpoenas, compelling orders, orders to show cause and other legal documentation to individuals, partnerships and corporations.
  • Conducts detailed, independent investigations under the direction of an attorney, to ensure that each assigned defendant is receiving fair treatment under the judicial system.
  • Transports individuals involved with cases and witnesses.
  • Records and maintains chain of evidence and transports to evidence storage location.
  • Photographs, sketches and reconstructs crime scenes.
