Position Summary

As an academic medical center with a rich history of providing life‑saving treatment in Southern Nevada, UMC serves as the anchor hospital of the Las Vegas Medical District, offering Nevada’s highest level of care to promote successful medical outcomes for patients. We are home to Nevada’s only Level I Trauma Center, Designated Pediatric Trauma Center, Burn Care Center, and Transplant Center.

We are a Pathway Designated facility by the ANCC and we are on our journey to Magnet status.

Works collaboratively with the Patient Placement Center to assess, plan, facilitate, track, and monitor the patient through the system. A nurse navigator facilitates access to medical care for patients. Assists the patient and family navigate through possible barriers to care, ensuring patients obtain medical access and referral resources in an efficient and expedited manner. Responsible for coordination of patient flow within the hospital including inter‑facility transfers, inpatient admissions, and intra‑facility transfers, assessing and assigning all scheduled and unscheduled admission requests to appropriate bed.

Navigate transfer requests by working with physicians, clinical supervisors within the hospital, and outside agencies.

Job Requirements

Education/

Experience:

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and three (3) years of clinical nursing experience, including two (2) years in critical care or emergency nursing, case management, or utilization review.

Licensing/Certification Requirements: Valid license by the State of Nevada to practice as a Registered Nurse. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification accepted by the American Heart Association (AHA);
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Advanced Life Support (ALS) accepted by the American Red Cross.

Position Requirements
  • Minimum of two years recent, within the past five years, critical care nursing experience
  • EPIC experience
  • Prior documented experience working in a transfer center and/or as a Nurse Navigator handling inbound and outbound transfers from acute care facilities
  • Recent documented experience with an emphasis on authorization and referrals for the outpatient infusion clinic setting
  • Recent documented experience utilizing insurance authorization portals for Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Health Plan of Nevada
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel

Nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation and coordination of patient care); standards and appropriate level of care; disease process of illnesses or injuries in a variety of specialty areas; patient care plan development; patient evaluation and assessment techniques;
Nurse Practice Act, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health care Organizations (JCAHO), Federal and State regulations; UMC policies and procedures; department and hospital safety practices and procedures; patient rights; infection control policies and practices; handling, storage, use and disposal of hazardous materials; department and hospital emergency response policies and practices; age‑specific patient care practices.

Effective communication with all levels of organization; problem solving and multitasking; working with patients in a variety of conditions; interpreting rules and regulations; interpreting and analyzing patient medical charts; organizing, prioritizing and delegating work; using computers and a variety of software applications; communicating with a wide variety of people from diverse socio‑economic and ethnic backgrounds under stressful conditions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all personnel contacted in the course of duties;

efficient, effective and safe use of equipment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Mobility to work in a typical clinical setting and use standard equipment, stamina to remain standing and/or walk for extended periods of time, vision to read printed materials and a VDT screen, and hearing and speech to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms. Strength and agility to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 50 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
