Overview
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) has specialized skills and knowledge related to the setting in which they practice. Responsibilities include performing physical exams, collecting and documenting data, conducting approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering and scheduling laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribing appropriate interventions and medications, and providing direct patient care services, all according to established evidence‑based clinical practice standards.
The NP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, consulting, and leads the organization and the advance practice profession. Duties may include, but are not limited to, obtaining patient health histories, completing physical examinations, documenting findings, interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests, performing specialty procedures, and facilitating efficient operational flow of patients through their continuum of care. The NP acts as part of inter‑professional teams by communicating, planning, and implementing care directly with physicians, pharmacists, office support staff, and other advance practice providers (APPs) and retains responsibility for ongoing clinical management of the patient.
EssentialDuties
- Conductes in‑depth interviews with patients and/or family, constructs comprehensive medical histories, performs initial and periodic physical examinations, and explores patient interpretation of health needs.
- Identifies and treats patients’ diseases and manages treatment of hospitalized patients.
- Directly performs or orders appropriate diagnostic studies and interprets finished results.
- Develops and implements long‑ and short‑range treatment plans.
- Performs procedures such as obtaining specimens, injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care, and management of trauma or infection conditions.
- Writes orders to adjust medication, subject to physician counter‑signing.
- Initiates consultations and monitors scheduling of special tests.
- Identifies records pertinent to patient progress, updates and summarizes charts, changes orders as appropriate, and notifies the responsible physician of changes in patient condition.
- Provides instruction and counseling regarding preventive care, medical and psychological problems, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
- Acts as liaison with governmental agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Health.
- Assists with medical research projects, follows research protocols, obtains Institutional Review Board approval for treatment protocols.
- Researches community resources for patient referral and matches patients to appropriate resources based on medical needs.
- Maintains compliance with university and department policies, quality assurance, safety, infection control, and accreditation and regulatory agencies’ requirements.
- Participates in in‑service education programs and professional associations.
- Master’s degree from an accredited school of Nursing (MSN).
- Five years of combined education and experience; clinical nursing experience required.
- If less than 2 years or 2,000 hours of clinical experience, prescription of Schedule II controlled substances may not occur without a protocol approved by a collaborating physician.
- Excellent communication skills in speaking, reading, and writing English.
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions and ability to understand, follow, and perform duties successfully.
- Bilingual in Spanish, with the ability to fully understand and to be understood by all Spanish‑speaking individuals.
- Registered Nurse – RN (California Board of Registered Nursing).
- Nurse Practitioner – NP (California Board of Registered Nursing).
- Nurse Practitioner Furnisher – California Drug Controller Authority, current license to furnish medications in California.
