Nurse Practitioner Responsibilities
- Conduct in‑depth interviews with patients and/or family, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, and explore patient’s interpretation of health needs.
- Identify and treat patients’ diseases and manage treatment of hospitalized patients.
- Directly perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret finished results.
- Develop and implement long‑range and short‑range treatment plans.
- Perform procedures such as obtaining specimens, performing injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care and management of conditions produced by trauma or infection.
- Write orders to increase, decrease or change medication, subject to physician checking and counter‑signing.
- Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests.
- Identify records pertinent to progress of patients, update and summarize charts, change orders when appropriate, and notify responsible physician of changes in the patient’s condition.
- Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical problems, psychological problems, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
- Act as liaison with governmental agencies such as CDC and NIH.
- Assist with medical research projects and protocol approval.
- Research community resources for referral and refer patients to appropriate resources.
- Maintain compliance with university policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental, infection control and accreditation requirements.
- Participate in in‑service education programs and professional associations.
- Execute leadership roles: direct/indirect patient care, support of systems, research, education, and professional leadership.
- Manage clinical aspects of clinic, patient rounding and care, nursing performance improvement, competency evaluations, staffing, scheduling, and orientation/training of new employees.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree from an accredited school of Nursing (MSN).
- Five years of combined education/experience or clinical nursing experience.
- Clinical nursing experience; if less than 2 years or 2,000 hours, Schedule II controlled substances may not be prescribed without a protocol approved by a collaborating physician.
- Excellent communication skills in English (speaking, reading, writing).
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions and ability to understand, follow, and perform duties successfully.
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- Registered Nurse – RN (CA Board of Registered Nursing).
- Nurse Practitioner – NP (CA Board of Registered Nursing).
- Nurse Practitioner Furnisher – CA DCA (current license to furnish medications in CA).
- DEA Certificate – issued by the U.S. Department of Justice for Schedule II–V controlled substances.
- NP Board Certified – National Board Certification in NP specialty accredited by ABSNC or NCCA.
- For Hospital/Acute Care Setting – Certification from ANCC or AACN as ACNP or AGACNP (Grandfathered if hired prior to 12/2015).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider – American Heart Association.
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association (required for hospital/acute & infusion center clinic settings only).
- Fire Life Safety Training – LA City (must have card upon hire; obtain within 30 days).
- Below applies to Las Vegas only:
- Nurse Practitioner specialized certifications: ACNP, ANP, FNP, or AGNP.
- DEA Certificate with Nevada address.
- Board of Pharmacy License – Nevada.
- Registered Nurse – Nevada State Board.
- USC Credentialing within 6 months.
- BLS – American Heart Association.
The annual base salary range for this position is $95,680.00 – $.
