The Nurse Practitioner (NP) has specialized knowledge and skills related to the setting in which they practice. They perform physical exams, collect and document data, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribe medications, and provide direct patient care services according to established evidence‑based clinical practice standards. The NP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, consulting, and provides leadership to the organization and the advancing practice profession.

The NP also helps facilitate safe and efficient operational flow of patients through their continuum of care and functions as part of inter‑professional teams by communicating, planning, and implementing care directly with other healthcare professionals, including physicians, pharmacists, office support staff, and other advance practice providers (APPs).

Essential Duties
  • Conduct in‑depth interviews with patients and/or family, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, and explore patient’s interpretation of health needs.
  • Identify and treat patients’ diseases.
  • Manage treatment of hospitalized patients.
  • Perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret finished results.
  • Develop and implement short‑ and long‑term treatment plans.
  • Perform procedures such as obtaining specimens, injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care and management of trauma or infection conditions.
  • Write orders to adjust medications, subject to checking and counter‑signing by a physician.
  • Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests.
  • Identify and update pertinent records, summarize charts, change orders when appropriate, and notify the responsible physician of changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical and psychological problems, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
  • Act as liaison with governmental agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health.
  • Assist with medical research projects following research protocols.
  • Obtain Investigational Review Board approval for treatment protocols.
  • Research community resources for patient referral.
  • Refer patients to the most appropriate resource based on medical needs and condition.
  • Maintain compliance with established University and department policies and procedures, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control standards, and comply with accreditation and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Participate in in‑service education programs and professional associations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (MSN) from an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Five years of combined education and clinical experience.
  • If less than two years or 2,000 hours of clinical experience, ScheduleII controlled substances may not be prescribed without a protocol approved by a collaborating physician.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to speak, read and write English proficiently.
  • Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions, and ability to understand, follow and successfully perform duties.
Required Licenses / Certifications
  • Registered Nurse – RN (California Board of Registered Nursing).
  • Nurse Practitioner – NP (California Board of Registered Nursing).
  • Nurse Practitioner Furnisher (California DCA) – current license to furnish medications in California.
  • DEA Certificate – issued by the U.S. Department of Justice for ScheduleII–V controlled substances.
  • NP Board Certified – possession of National Board Certification in the Nurse Practitioner specialty accredited by ABSNC or NCCA.
  • If working in a Hospital/Acute Care Setting, certification from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Association of Critical‑Care Nurses (AACN) as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) or Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) upon hire (grandfathered if hired or transferred prior to 12/2015).
