Job Description

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Ergonomics Specialist, Risk Management Services (R0152333).

Role of the Position

Reporting to the Occupational Safety Program Manager, the Ergonomic Specialist coordinates and administers the university’s ergonomic program for UNLV and Nevada State University, focusing on the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and the promotion of safe, healthy work environments. The role is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the ergonomic program; conducting workplace and task‑specific assessments; and implementing risk‑reduction strategies to minimize injuries and improve employee well‑being.

This position collaborates with departments, supervisors, Planning & Construction, Environmental Health & Safety, and Human Resources to address ergonomic concerns, support workplace accommodations, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and industry best practices. The role analyzes injury trends, recommends engineering and administrative controls, supports training and outreach initiatives, and continuously evaluates program effectiveness to strengthen campus‑wide safety. Additionally, the position assists in investigating injuries and incidents involving potential MSDs and evaluates ergonomic risk factors that may have contributed to the incident.

Primary

Job Duties
  • Conduct comprehensive on‑site ergonomic evaluations to identify risk factors such as repetitive motion, awkward postures, forceful exertions, and improper body mechanics.
  • Perform task‑specific assessments, including evaluations of lifting techniques, tool and equipment use, and repetitive job functions.
  • Conduct noise sampling and lighting surveys as part of workplace assessments as needed.
  • Identify high‑risk work areas through the review of incident reports, injury claims, MSD trends, and departmental referrals.
  • Review and follow up on MSD cases and related incidents to determine root causes and prevent recurrence.
  • Recommend engineering, administrative, and equipment‑based controls to reduce physical strain and injury risk.
  • Collaborate with Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) on engineering controls and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
  • Assist the OSH department with investigating injuries and incidents involving potential MSDs and evaluate ergonomic risk factors that may have contributed to the incident.
Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Ergonomics, or a related field from an accredited college or university and 1–3 years of experience conducting ergonomic assessments, evaluating office workstations and task‑specific activities to assess body mechanics, implementing risk‑reduction strategies, or performing related work in occupational health and safety. Additionally, 1–3 years of experience in coordinating and implementing an ergonomic program. OR, in lieu of a degree, five to seven years of equivalent professional experience in ergonomic safety.

Equivalences for Degree Requirement
  • In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, applicants may qualify with four additional years of relevant experience, or with an associate’s degree plus two additional years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications

Certified Ergonomic Assessment Specialist (CEAS I or higher) certification, or an equivalent professional ergonomics credential, preferred.

Salary

Salary range is $65,000 – $75,000, or commensurate with the labor market.
