Overview

A retail buyer purchases products to be sold in retail stores. She is responsible for studying consumer buying trends, analyzing the market, and determining the newest styles and products. For example, in the clothing industry, the buyer must consider all of the newest fashion trends and then determine which of those trends fits the demographics of her particular shop.

• Negotiate contracts with wholesalers or vendors to secure favorable terms.
• Determine and purchase products that align with store demographics, while managing costs.
• Collaborate with the financial operator to set consumer pricing.
• Manage inventory levels, ensuring popular items remain stocked.
• Forecast buying trends by working with market analysts, predicting consumer spending for fiscal quarters.
• Choose product attributes that meet consumer preferences (e.g., color, style, materials).
• Attend fashion shows, conferences, and exhibitions to stay current on trends.
• Assess the financial risks of new purchases, aiming to protect store profitability.

Education requirements vary by organization and industry. Many large employers prefer candidates with four‑year degrees in business or economics. Some employers in specialized manufacturing industries may require master’s degrees in their specific fields. New retail buyers often undergo an interim training period of one to five years before working independently.
