Job Description
University Police Department (UPD), Southern Command invites applications for Community Service Officers (CSO) (Classification: Security Officer, Title Series: 11.260). This position will perform a variety of security related tasks for various NSHE campuses under UPD, Southern Command. The successful candidate will demonstrate support for diversity, equity and inclusiveness and participate in maintaining a respectful, positive work environment.
ProfileThe Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) is a public system that serves over 100,000 students and 15,000 employees. UPD, Southern Command, is a full–service category I law enforcement agency that serves the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the College of Southern Nevada, the Desert Research Institute and Nevada State College. The department consists of 120 employees and is responsible for the public safety needs of 80,000 students, faculty and staff over an 800 square mile service area.

Minimum Qualifications- Graduation from high school or equivalent education.
- Two years of experience in public contact work, including applying and implementing rules, regulations, or established policies.
- Valid driver’s license at time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment.
- Up to date certifications in CPR and first aid, if required for the specific position.
- Must submit to a pre‑employment screening for controlled substances due to public safety impact.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
- Strong customer service orientation.

- Ability to multi‑task, problem‑solve, and maintain confidentiality.
- Maintain constant radio communication and monitor radio traffic, responding to all calls addressed to them.
- Work independently without direct supervision.
- Stand unassisted for long periods of time.
- Assist in providing medical attention to those that require it (Certified in CPR, defibrillator, and first aid).
- Notify UPD of all emergency situations including fire alarms, fights, disturbances, medical emergencies, etc.
- Relay knowledge of emergency situations to responding police units.
- Provide walking safety escorts as directed or requested.
- Assist with unlocks for students or employees who are locked out of an authorized space.
- Collect found property and properly secure or release it.
- Provide assistance to other campus departments (e.g., Special Events, vendor access to facilities).
- Complete walking foot patrol of buildings and grounds, checking for safety and security concerns.
- Submit work orders for issues observed that need repair (e.g., lights that are out, damaged property).
- Assist with checks of emergency call boxes.
- Assist with jump starts for disabled vehicles.
- Respond to other non‑confrontational calls for service as directed.
- Engage with community members and participate in community outreach events.
- Observe, report and check on the welfare of individuals.
- Complete information reports for property intake or for incidents as requested.
- Immediately report any injury sustained while on duty.
- Perform other duties as assigned by a Supervisor or Superior Officer.
Grade 27, Step 1, salary $46,666.80. Step refers to the specific rate of pay within a grade.
