The Equipment Operator, under supervision of the Project Manager, Supervisor or Foreman, performs work involving the use of large equipment, including tractors, loaders, trenchers, backhoes, trucks and other construction equipment.
Responsibilities- Operate excavators, bulldozers, skid steers, backhoes, compactors, loaders, trenchers, and utility vehicles for earthmoving, grading, and site prep.
- Shape and grade greens, tees, bunkers, fairways, ponds, and drainage channels to plans and grade stakes.
- Install and backfill drainage, irrigation mainlines, catch basins, and related site utilities; compact trenches and finish surfaces.
- Build and renovate bunkers: cut edges, form contours, install liners/drainage, and place sand.
- Read and follow construction plans, grade elevations, and laser/optical level instructions; assist in layout and staking.
- Perform finish work with hand tools and plate compactor to prepare seed/sod/stone surfaces.
- Conduct routine equipment inspections, preventative maintenance, basic repairs, fueling, and cleaning; report major issues.
- Coordinate with crew leads, irrigation techs, and project managers to meet schedule and quality standards.
- Adhere to site safety protocols, use PPE, and maintain clean, organized work areas.
- Minimum 2–3 years operating heavy equipment in construction, landscaping, or golf course projects (golf construction experience preferred).
- Comfortable reading blueprints/grade sheets and using laser levels or grade rods.
- Valid driver’s license; CDL preferred but not required.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and basic maintenance skills.
- Ability to follow directions, work on a team, and communicate effectively on site.
- Able to perform moderate to heavy physical labor; lift 50+ lbs, climb in/out of equipment, bend, and stand for long periods.
- Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather and on uneven terrain.
- Project-based work on construction sites; occasional long hours, early starts, weekends during peak phases.
- Exposure to dust, noise, diesel fumes, and heavy machinery.
- Heavy equipment operator certifications, OSHA 10/30, or safety training a plus.
- Experience with golf course construction companies or civil/site grading preferred.
