The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Heavy Mechanic. This position diagnoses and performs major and minor repairs on all systems of diesel and gasoline engines; performs diagnostic activities for electronic fuel systems and electronic computer-controlled systems; maintains and repairs a variety of heavy equipment including diesel, gasoline, and alternative fuel engines. This job primarily works on vehicles with a GVWR exceeding 26,000 lbs.
DistinguishingCharacteristics
This is the full journey level class within the Heavy Mechanic series. Employees within this class performs the full range of duties as assigned; receives only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise; and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
Supervision Received and ExercisedReceives general supervision from Fleet Services Supervisor, or higher level staff.
Essential FunctionsThree years of increasingly responsible commercial truck and heavy construction equipment mechanical repair experience, including diesel engines and electrical and electronic component repair.
TrainingEquivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by specialized training in diversified mechanical repair of vehicles and automotive equipment.
License or CertificatePossession of an appropriate valid Commercial Class B driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.
Tanker endorsement within six (6) months of date of hire, and maintenance thereafter.
Possession of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification Medium/Heavy Duty Brakes T4 and Preventive Maintenance Inspection T8 within six (6) months of date of hire, and maintenance thereafter.
Possession of a fork lift certificate issued by the City of Las Vegas within 6 months of the date of appointment.
Possession of a 1G Emissions Inspector license from the state of Nevada within six (6) months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.
Possession of the following licenses and certificates are desirable:
An Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificate in one or more areas.
Class A commercial driver's license
Environmental Protection Agency Section 609 certificate
Knowledge ofPrinciples, practices, techniques and procedures of inspection, diagnosis and repair of diesel, gasoline, and alternative fuel engines.
Heavy Truck and construction equipment, heavy duty trailers and other maintenance equipment.
Electronic fuel and computer-controlled systems.
Operational characteristics and uses of automotive, commercial truck, and construction equipment, diagnostic and repair tools.
General automotive electrical, hydraulic and air-conditioning repair.
