About the Role
The Automation Maintenance Technician will repair and calibrate our automated and robotic systems. This includes Symbotic’s Automated Adapters, Vertical Lifts, and the fleet of automated robotic vehicles. The technician will serve as the system expert covering mechanical, PLC, electrical, and electronic subsystems and will support system upkeep and operations.
What You’ll Do- Ensure that the safety commitments in compliance with OSHA, Symbotic, and our customers’ processes and procedures are met daily.
- Perform inspections on systems associated with the Automated Storage and Retrieval System of automated robotic vehicles and Automated Adapters/Lifts.
- Support continuous operation by adjusting, calibrating, repairing, replacing or modifying system components.
- Process and monitor the flow of the automated storage and retrieval system through the adapters, including manual inbound, automatic inbound, and automatic outbound, to achieve maximum throughput and cases per hour.
- Troubleshoot automated robotic vehicle anomalies and stoppages using schematic and wiring diagrams as well as advanced test equipment.
- Demonstrate PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) knowledge and troubleshooting skills.
- Apply advanced troubleshooting skills and follow electro‑mechanical diagrams.
- Perform periodic system inspections within expected durations on all equipment and thoroughly document all actions and repairs, including parts used and labor. Ensure quality maintenance and complete documentation via the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Effectively communicate production‑impacting problems and suggested actions, including approximate time required for corrective and emergency maintenance.
- Operate and run automated systems.
- Adapt to a dynamic environment and change course based on immediate business needs.
- Clean up equipment and remove replaced parts from work areas after repairs are completed.
- Recover automated robotic vehicles in the Symbotic Matrix select system, including working in restrictive environments.
- Perform minor utility work such as machining holes, brackets; cutting steel; aligning sensors; attaching Unistrut; etc.
- Troubleshoot, calibrate, set up, and perform tool changes on robotic arms.
- Continuously clean and adhere to 5S policies.
- Perform Cell Operator functions as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by leadership.
- Associate degree or equivalent experience/certification in electronics, automotive, automation, manufacturing or equivalent field preferred.
- At least one year of experience with mechanical automation systems or educational/training equivalent.
- Strong electro‑mechanical skills.
- Ability to maintain required productivity/work expectations.
- Ability to work independently of a supervisor following procedures and manuals.
- Ability to multi‑task and perform multiple job functions at once.
- Demonstrated commitment and ability to work safely.
- Reliable and maintains satisfactory attendance.
- Proficient in performing all inspection functions.
- Produces quality work.
- Has a high sense of urgency.
- Must be literate, written and verbal, in English.
- Approximately 75% of time will be spent on a construction site with PPE required (hard hat, safety vest, steel toes, eyeglasses, ear protection, fall protection such as safety harness).
- Steep stairs to climb into the structure may be required; routine walking up and down stairs to navigate the automation structure.
- Regularly near railings that are high off the ground.
- Subject to environmental conditions; must be capable of working in temperatures ranging from 105° to 32° Fahrenheit.
- Frequent ability to safely and efficiently lift items weighing up to 50 lbs and move items weighing up to 80 lbs.
- Stand or walk for up to 10‑12 hours and frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms.
- Routinely required to work at heights of up to 45 feet and within restrictive areas of 24 inches, including standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
