The Role

As the Technical Maintenance Trainer
, you will be the driving force behind the skill development of our field teams. You won’t just be in a classroom; you’ll be on-site and hands‑on, translating complex technical manuals into practical "checklist‑style" Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and certifying our technicians in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and appliance repair.

In this role, you will conduct thorough needs assessments to support strategic decisions associated with Learning & Development (L&D) efforts that drive key maintenance initiatives. You will work closely with Maintenance Supervisors, Community Managers, and Regional Maintenance Leadership to support department goals such as reducing employee turnover, improving service request response times, and maximizing Make‑Ready efficiency across our portfolio in Nevada, California, and Texas.

What You Will Do
  • Curriculum Development: Design, develop, and facilitate specialized training for HVAC (410A/R22), plumbing, electrical panels, and common multifamily appliances (GE, Hotpoint, etc.).
  • Hands‑on Instruction: Lead classroom, virtual, and one‑on‑one "side‑by‑side" training sessions at various apartment communities.
  • Certification Management: Act as a proctor and facilitator for industry certifications, including EPA and CAMT.
  • SOP Creation: Translate technical jargon into easy‑to‑follow Standard Operating Procedures for entry‑level technicians.
  • Evaluation &

    Coaching:

Conduct needs assessments, track training scores, provide remediation, and offer internal technical coaching to field staff.
  • Train‑the‑Trainer: Develop programs to certify senior maintenance technicians as internal trainers.
  • Administrative Oversight: Maintain training calendars, ensure record compliance, and stay current on industry trends and safety standards.
Required Qualifications:
  • Technical Expertise: Minimum 5 years of Subject Matter Expertise in diagnosing and repairing HVAC (410A/R22), electrical systems, and multifamily appliances.
  • Certification: Must hold a valid EPA Type II or Universal (I, II, and III) certification.
  • High energy and self‑motivated.
  • Strong "checklist" mindset with extreme attention to detail.
  • Excellent presentation skills with the ability to motivate learners of all skill levels.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is required for this role.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Mobility: A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel ~30% of the time (overnight travel included).
Preferred Experience:
  • 2+ years of experience in adult education, classroom instruction, or virtual training.
  • Trade certification or Associate's degree in a relevant field (HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing).
  • Experience with Entrata or similar property management software.
  • Certifications such as CPLP (Certified Professional in Learning and Performance) or instructional design credentials.
Physical Requirements & Environment

This is an active role. You will spend time in corporate offices and home offices, but you will also be "in the trenches" at our properties. This includes:

  • Standing for multiple hours during training sessions.
  • Walking properties, climbing stairs, and navigating uneven terrain.
  • Occasionally lifting/moving up to 50 lbs.
  • Exposure to varied outdoor weather conditions during property visits.
Why Join the Westland Team?

We take pride in our team members and offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance (with dependent coverage)
  • Life Insurance and Disability Insurance
  • 401(k) with a generous employer match
  • 10 days of paid vacation to start
  • Paid holidays
  • Generous Rent Discounts at our properties!
