Job DescriptionJob Summary
The HDD Operator is responsible for safely operating horizontal directional drilling equipment to install underground utilities such as telecommunications, electrical, water, sewer, and gas lines. This position requires experience with HDD equipment, reading utility plans, locating underground utilities, and maintaining a safe, productive job site. The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, and capable of working in various weather conditions while meeting project deadlines.
Key Responsibilities- Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment to install underground utility systems.
- Perform pre-job planning by reviewing project plans, utility locates, and bore profiles.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and perform routine maintenance.
- Set up and operate drilling equipment, including drill rigs, mud mixing systems, and support equipment.
- Monitor drill head location using electronic locating equipment and adjust drilling path as needed.
- Coordinate with supervisors, locators, and crew members to ensure safe and accurate drilling.
- Identify and avoid existing underground utilities during drilling operations.
- Complete bore logs, daily reports, equipment inspections, and other required documentation.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and report maintenance needs promptly.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow all OSHA, company safety policies, and local regulations.
- Assist with restoration, cleanup, and other construction duties as required.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work on uneven terrain.
- Manual dexterity to operate heavy equipment and hand tools.
- Ability to work extended hours as project demands require.
- Exposure to dust, mud, noise, vibration, and changing weather conditions.
- Frequent travel to job sites.
- Overtime and weekend work may be required.
- Always wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Follow all OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Participate in daily safety meetings and job hazard analyses.
- Report unsafe conditions, near misses, and incidents immediately.
- Protect existing utilities and ensure safe excavation practices.
- Complete bore installations accurately and efficiently.
- Minimize utility strikes and equipment downtime.
- Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and strong teamwork.
- Consistently uphold safety and quality standards.
Reports To: Construction Superintendent or Field Supervisor
Employment Type: Full-Time
Pay Range: Competitive; based on experience, certifications, and qualifications.
Required Qualifications- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 2–5 years of experience operating HDD equipment.
- Experience with Ditch Witch, Vermeer, or similar directional drilling equipment.
- Knowledge of underground utility installation and excavation practices.
- Ability to read construction plans, utility maps, and bore profiles.
- Familiarity with utility locating systems and locating procedures.
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physically demanding work.
- Willingness to travel and work overtime, weekends, or overnight shifts as needed.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction Certification
- CDL Class A or B
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Confined Space Awareness (if applicable)
- Trench Safety Training
- Utility Locator Certification (preferred)
- Safe operation of HDD drilling equipment
- Electronic locating and bore tracking
- Equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
- Knowledge of drilling fluid systems
- Strong communication and teamwork
- Time management and organizational skills
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Problem-solving under changing field conditions
