Job Description Position SummaryThe Telecommunications Construction Laborer is responsible for assisting in the installation of underground telecommunications infrastructure, including conduit systems and utility vaults. This position performs physical labor associated with micro trenching, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), bore operations, excavation, vault placement, conduit installation, and site restoration while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and productivity.
The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, and experienced working in underground utility construction environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assist with the installation of telecommunications conduit systems using:
- Micro trenching methods
- Horizontal directional drilling (HDD)
- Pneumatic or conventional bore methods
- Excavate, prepare, and backfill trenches and vault locations.
- Install PVC, HDPE, and other telecommunications conduit systems according to project specifications.
- Assist with pulling, assembling, and securing conduit and innerduct.
- Set, level, and install telecommunications utility vaults ranging from small handholes to large precast concrete vaults using proper rigging and lifting procedures.
- Prepare vault foundations, including grading and compacting subgrade and installing base materials.
- Assist operators with excavation, boring, trenching, and heavy equipment operations.
- Compact soil and restore work areas to required specifications.
- Install warning tape, tracer wire, and other underground utility components.
- Safely use hand tools, power tools, compactors, saws, and other construction equipment.
- Load, unload, and organize materials, tools, and equipment.
- Maintain a clean and organized job site.
- Perform traffic control duties when required.
- Identify existing underground utilities and assist with potholing and exposure.
- Follow utility locates and project drawings.
- Assist in concrete, asphalt, landscape, and surface restoration.
- Complete daily equipment inspections and report maintenance issues.
- Follow OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and customer requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Frequently lift and carry up to 75 pounds; occasionally lift heavier materials with assistance or mechanical equipment.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, climb, and crawl for extended periods.
- Work in trenches, excavations, and confined work areas.
- Operate in hot, cold, wet, dusty, and uneven terrain.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) including hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and steel-toe boots.
- Ability to work around heavy machinery and moving equipment.
- Exposure to changing weather conditions.
- Construction noise, dust, mud, and heavy equipment.
- Frequent travel between job sites may be required.
- Overtime and weekend work as necessary to meet project schedules.
- Comply with all OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
- Participate in daily Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and safety meetings.
- Properly inspect and use tools and equipment.
- Report unsafe conditions immediately.
- Maintain situational awareness around excavation, heavy equipment, and utility operations.
- Follow excavation safety and confined space procedures when applicable.
- Reliability and punctuality.
- Strong teamwork and communication.
- Pride in producing high-quality work.
- Willingness to learn new construction methods and equipment.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced construction environment.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous experience in underground utility or telecommunications construction preferred.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in various weather conditions.
- Ability to read tape measures and follow construction drawings.
- Basic knowledge of underground utility installation practices.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record preferred.
- Ability to work overtime, weekends, and travel as project needs require.
- Experience with telecommunications conduit installation.
- Experience working around HDD crews.
- Experience with micro trenching operations.
- Experience setting precast concrete utility vaults.
- Traffic Control/Flagger certification.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
- CPR/First Aid certification.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a plus.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a crew.
- Ability to operate hand and power tools safely.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
