Horizontal Directional Drillers and Operators are responsible for safely operating drilling equipment to install underground utilities, such as fiber, conduit, and related infrastructure. This full-time, on-site role in Las Vegas, NV includes setting up drill rigs, planning bore paths, monitoring drilling progress, and performing routine equipment inspections and maintenance. Daily tasks involve reading and interpreting project plans, communicating with site supervisors and locator personnel, and adjusting operations based on ground conditions and obstacles.
The role requires strict adherence to safety regulations, documentation of work performed, and coordination with other crew members to ensure timely, high-quality project completion. Operators also assist with site preparation, cleanup, and basic troubleshooting of mechanical and technical issues related to drilling operations.
- Demonstrated experience operating horizontal directional drilling (HDD) rigs and related equipment, including setup, operation, and shutdown.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, utility maps, and bore profiles, with strong attention to detail and safety.
- Knowledge of underground utility construction practices, including trenchless installation, locating, and safe digging procedures.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and basic troubleshooting skills for drilling rigs, support trucks, and small tools.
- Commitment to safety, including understanding OSHA requirements, PPE use, and safe work practices in active job sites.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to coordinate with supervisors, locators, and crew members.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, perform physically demanding tasks, and lift moderate to heavy loads as needed.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record; CDL and experience with transporting equipment are a plus.
- Prior experience in telecom, fiber installation, or utility construction is preferred; familiarity with GIS-based project tracking is an advantage.
- High school diploma or equivalent; relevant technical training or certifications in HDD operations or utility construction are beneficial.
