The company is founder‑led, profitable and growing. We are hiring an Engineering Manager for the expanding MAAS team, which delivers our Metal‑as‑a‑Service (MAAS) hyperscale provisioning technology. MAAS is an evolving Python/Go stack that spans hardware detection, provisioning, and a web interface, API and CLI. Successful engineers are fluent across all layers of this distributed system.
Canonical seeks passionate technical leaders eager to innovate in one of our flagship data‑center products. You will shape the future of data‑center technology, driving day‑zero deployment to long‑term expansion and maintenance.
Technical Leadership- Lead a distributed team of engineers in your time zone (Americas, EMEA, etc.).
- Develop talent through coaching, mentoring, feedback and career planning.
- Set and manage expectations with other engineering teams, senior management and external stakeholders.
- Advocate and advance modern software development practices.
- Participate in engineering processes through code and architectural review.
- Engage with broader teams at Canonical, the open‑source community and partners.
- Travel to internal and external global events for 4 to 6 weeks per year.
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science or related field.
- Exceptional academic record.
- Proven experience delivering software using Python, Golang or similar languages.
- Experience with Linux system administration (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
- Familiarity with modern Linux cloud computing technologies, including networking, storage, containers and Kubernetes.
- Technical aptitude for complex distributed systems.
- Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
- Experience with agile software development methodologies.
- Ability to mentor, develop and support team members.
- Result‑oriented with a personal drive to meet commitments.
- Ability to travel internationally twice a year for up to two weeks.
- Experience with Typescript and modern web frameworks such as React, Angular, Svelte or Vue.
- Data center infrastructure management and design.
- Distributed work environment with twice‑yearly team sprints in person.
