Career OpportunityThe city of Las Vegas is accepting applications for Aquatics Leader. This position is responsible for the overall operation of assigned swimming pool facilities throughout the city; coordinates location staffing; identifies facilities maintenance needs; contacts appropriate maintenance staff as needed; develops aquatics programs.
Examination ProcessA civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a city position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only.
The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.
You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list.
Selection ProcessFinal candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.
OverviewResponsible for the day-to-day operation of assigned swimming pool facilities throughout the city; coordinates location staffing; identifies facilities maintenance needs; contacts appropriate maintenance staff as needed; provides aquatics programming.
Supervision Received and ExercisedReceives general supervision from Aquatics Coordinator or higher level staff.
Essential Functions- When overseeing hourly workers, ensures employees adhere to established work methods, techniques, and schedules, and comply with applicable city and department policies, procedures, standards, and specifications; reviews needs with appropriate management staff; allocates resources accordingly.
- Coordinates hourly aquatics staff; schedules coverage and rotations.
- Plans, schedules and monitors swim classes, meets and other activities and special events; evaluates instructional programs from a cost-benefit perspective.
- Provides instructor certification training to qualified aquatics staff; occasionally instructs First Aid, CPR, and AED classes as needed.
- Performs lifeguarding and rescue techniques on stand as needed to ensure proper ratios are maintained.
- Monitors and gathers information from various sources to identify needs and trends for new programs; drafts program outlines which include the target participant group, description of the activity, estimate of staffing and equipment needs and any other costs, potential risks and plans to minimize them; evaluates pricing based on industry and regional competition and/or standards; submits plan to management for approval and upon approval, proceeds with implementation.
- Participates in front desk operations, including answering telephones, registering participants, selling passes, collecting fees, preparing cash deposit and report, providing information, entering and updating class and program information in the recreational software or other data-driven software system, entering attendance and responding to complaints.
- Coordinates aquatics facility rentals for private events including collecting payments, scheduling staff and setting up safety and recreation equipment.
- Teaches lifeguard CPR, first aid and instructor-level certification classes.
- Visits pool sites to ensure appropriate levels of safety, cleanliness and service; provides corrective instruction to city staff as necessary.
- Enforces facility, department and city rules and regulations.
- Assists in preparing promotional materials and displays.
- Maintains inventory of equipment. Participates in the procurement process, including researching materials and equipment.
- Participates in recruiting and training seasonal staff.
- Administers first aid and conducts pool rescues when needed.
- Assists in preparing pool safety audits and emergency action plans.
- Prepares a variety of paperwork and reports.
- Maintains a variety of automated and manual logs, records and files; performs a variety of record keeping, filing, indexing and other general clerical work.
