A part-time job on-campus offers a great way for you to earn money to help pay for school as well as to get a jump start on your career track. Student employment allows you to acquire work experience, transferable job skills, self-confidence, and develop a network of professional contacts for your future career. On-campus jobs include departmental, federal/state work-study, and graduate assistantships (GA) in non-academic departments.

Keep in mind that each department makes their own hiring decisions, therefore students are not placed in a job or guaranteed a job.

Position Title Academic Support Aide

The Language Learning Center ( LLC ) has four (4) openings for Academic Aid. We are welcoming applications from work-study-approved students. The primary role of this position will be tutoring students enrolled in the American Sign Language ( ASL ) or Spanish classes taught in the Department of Languages and Cultures at the New Mexico Highlands University. The LLC provides personal and professional opportunities for Academic Aides.

They are studying ASL or Spanish or have intermediate-level experience with these languages.

The tutors are responsible for offering supplemental instruction that ranges from beginner to intermediate levels in ASL or Spanish. The LLC provides services to students taking courses at the Department of Languages and Cultures. It is essential that the Academic Support Aides actively understand and support bilingualism at all levels and further the LLC goal of making everyone who utilizes the LLC services feel welcomed.

In addition, the LLC tutors assist students, faculty, and staff in fostering a safe and welcoming computer lab atmosphere for use by the campus community.

The LLC also sponsors cultural enrichment events and extracurricular activities, online and face-to-face, which are open to the NMHU and Las Vegas communities.

Job description may include routine duties with no prior experience needed to be able to perform. May involve a modest degree of responsibility and judgment. Routine data entry;
Answering phones;
Making copies;
Greeting customers;
Taking messages;
Managing confidential information;
Maintain regular attendance; and, Perform other job duties as assigned.

The position involves responsibility and judgment; punctuality and dependability are must-have qualities in all applicants. Academic Support Aides are to support both the community visitors of the LLC and the faculty of the Department of Languages and Culture. Throughout their employment, Academic Aides might find themselves doing any of the following on any regular basis as needed: tutoring students, routine data entry, taking & responding to messages (either by phone or email), managing confidential information, maintaining regular hours;

and performing other job duties as assigned by the LLC Director. The position requires strong communication skills, the ability to multitask, be self-motivated, collaborative, and possess excellent customer skills.

• Tutor and assist Spanish or ASL students in the online environment.
• Provide online supplemental instruction to students on an individual or small-group basis for proactive or remedial purposes.
• Conduct online group conversation sessions in ASL or Spanish.
• Participate actively in and organize the online tutoring environment to promote productivity and learning.
• Organize online presentations and activities for the students.
• Attend scheduled webinar training and development sessions with the LLC Director, Department Faculty, and the other tutors.
• Become knowledgeable of e-textbooks and websites used for introductory and intermediate level Spanish or ASL courses.
