Position Summary

The NMHU Media Arts & Technology Department invites applications for a full‑time, term instructor in Media Arts beginning August 15, 2022. Teaching duties include both graduate and undergraduate courses in Media Arts. We seek applications from candidates working at the intersection of creative production, cultural awareness, and technology. A successful candidate situates their practice within theoretical and cultural approaches to their teaching and research.

The candidate should be well versed in media history and theory, and will be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in a diverse interdisciplinary Media Arts & Technology program that emphasizes convergent technology skills used in digital storytelling along with industry‑standard production. We seek candidates whose teaching focuses on the application of digital media practices, particularly visual communications, installation, as well as courses in the successful candidate’s area of specialization.

Experience in graphic design, media theory, and internship programming is helpful.

The review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a link to a creative portfolio of at least 5 media projects for which the applicant served in a key creative capacity (i.e. creative director, designer, producer).

For evidence of teaching effectiveness, include contact information for three professional references and an unofficial graduate transcript (finalists will need to provide official transcripts). Candidates should describe in their cover letter how their teaching and scholarship will support the university’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, as well as their ability to work effectively with students across a wide range of identities and backgrounds.

Duties

and Responsibilities

The position requires a 24 credit hour per year teaching load. The candidate will participate in curriculum development, and should have the ability to administer both graduate and undergraduate curriculum and a willingness to engage with students beyond class time.

Minimum Qualifications

Interested applicants should hold an MFA in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Interactivity, Media, or a related field, and have a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience. Some professional experience is preferred. Applicants should feel comfortable with all levels of visual communications, design, and digital production, from beginner to advanced. Applicants must be comfortable with industry visual communications software.

Preferred Qualifications

Additional areas of focus, such as branding, identity, multi‑media, and interactive installation are encouraged.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Applicants should feel comfortable with all levels of design and visual communications from beginner to advanced. Applicants must be comfortable with industry standard design, production, photo and video editing software. The candidate may teach such classes as Visual Concepts, Imaging History & Production, Color Theory, Typography, Advanced Design Practices, Media Theory, and other classes in the future.
