Overview
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) has specialized skills and knowledge related to the setting in which they practice and performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care services, according to established evidence‑based clinical practice standards. The NP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, consulting, and provides leadership to the organization and advances the practice profession.
Responsibilities include obtaining patient health histories and complete physical examinations, documenting findings, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests, performing procedures as needed within specialty area, and facilitating a safe and efficient operational flow of the patient through the continuum of care. The NP functions as part of inter‑professional teams, communicating, planning, and implementing care directly with physicians, pharmacists, office support staff, and other advance practice providers (APPs).
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Conduct in‑depth interviews, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, and evaluate patient’s interpretation of health needs.
- Identify and treat patient diseases and manage hospitalized patient treatment.
- Perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret finished results.
- Develop and implement long‑ and short‑range treatment plans.
- Perform procedures such as obtaining specimens, injections, immunizations, lumbar punctures, skin biopsies, suturing, wound care, and management of trauma or infection‑related conditions.
- Write orders to adjust medication, subject to physician checking and counter‑signing.
- Initiate consultations and monitor scheduling of patients for special tests.
- Maintain patient records, update and summarize charts, modify orders as appropriate, and notify the responsible physician of changes in condition.
- Instruct and counsel patients and families regarding preventive care, medical, psychological problems, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
- Act as liaison with governmental agencies such as the Center for Disease Control and the National Institute of Health.
- Assist with medical research projects, following protocols, and obtain Institutional Review Board approval for treatment protocols.
- Research community resources for referral of patients and refer patients to the most appropriate resources based on medical needs and condition.
- Maintain compliance with university and department policies, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control, and regulatory agency requirements.
- Participate in in‑service education programs and professional associations.
- Master’s degree from an accredited school of nursing (MSN).
- Five years of combined education and clinical nursing experience.
- If less than two years or 2,000 hours of clinical experience, controlled substances may not be prescribed without an approved protocol.
- Excellent communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing in English).
- Knowledge of medical procedures and conditions and ability to understand, follow, and perform duties successfully.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred; ability to communicate effectively with Spanish‑speaking patients and staff.
- Registered Nurse – RN (California Board of Registered Nursing).
- Nurse Practitioner – NP (California Board of Registered Nursing).
- Nurse Practitioner Furnisher (California DCA) – current license to furnish medications in California.
- DEA Certificate issued by the U.S. Department of Justice for Schedule II–V controlled substances.
- Board certification in NP specialty accredited by ABSNC or NCCA; if working in hospital or acute care, certification from ANCC or AACN in Acute Care NP (ACNP) or Adult Gerontology Acute Care NP (AGACNP). (Grandfathered recognition for prior hire before 12/2015.)
