What to Expect

The Sr. Quality Engineer will work as a member of Tesla’s Fremont Quality Operations organization. The primary objective of this role is to support the production of high quality products through the continual improvement of process and product quality and the systems that surround them. The successful candidate for this position must be a problem-solver at the core, have a strong quality & customer-focused mindset, and have the personal drive and stamina for relentless continual improvement.

What

You'll Do
  • Lead cross‑functional problem‑solving teams to drive process and product improvements; use QA methodologies to manage and facilitate issue resolution including root cause investigations and the development, implementation and monitoring of effective corrective and preventive actions
  • Establish and maintain quality performance metrics
  • Develop and implement quality standards as part of the Tesla Quality System to assure products meet expectations of our target customers
  • Support the development of product specifications and tolerances, design and process FMEAs and DVAs
  • Establish and maintain control plans and inspection standards to assure critical features are controlled through the assembly/production processes
  • Lead/facilitate review and disposition of discrepant materials identified for control of nonconforming product
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area; follow daily housekeeping and 5S standards
  • Promote and maintain a culture and attitude of continuous improvement, working within the Tesla team to make it more efficient, safer and an enjoyable place to work
What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Mechanical or Industrial engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Quality systems experience in a manufacturing environment (automotive preferred)
  • Specific training and demonstrated success in applying quality problem‑solving methods such as fishbone diagrams, FMEA, process capability analysis, hypothesis testing, DoE, SPC, etc.
  • Experience with broad variety of measurement and inspection techniques
  • Ability, willingness to travel domestically, and internationally (5% to 10%)
  • Knowledge of functionality, GD&T, assembly processes, and testing at system level and component level of drive unit
  • Working knowledge of electric drive units, gearbox/transmission designs and associated components like gears, seals, castings, etc.
  • Working knowledge on how to operate gear manufacturing quality equipment such as roll testers, gear measuring machines, etc.
  • Working knowledge on how to operate heat treat quality lab equipment such as hardness tester, polisher, grinder, sample prep equipment, microscope, etc.
  • Working knowledge on how to read and interpret CMM reports, gear charts, heat treat specs, etc.

Compensation

Expected $82,800 – $189,000 annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits.
