Recreation Leader (Part-Time)

City of Lathrop is currently seeking applications to fill a vacancy in the Facilities Division. Interviews are tentatively scheduled for March 4, 2026.

The Position

Under close supervision, the Recreation Leader assists in conducting a wide variety of recreational and educational activities, monitoring events and classes, programs—including but not limited to youth and teen programs, senior activities, leisure enrichment classes, youth and adult sports—and City special events, as well as providing administrative support and customer service at City facilities and performing a variety of light custodial duties.

Supervision

Exercised/Received

Receives general supervision from a Recreation Supervisor and/or Recreation Coordinator. May receive lead and/or functional supervision from a Senior Recreation Leader. Incumbents may be required to routinely assist supervision of programs or facilities.

Essential Functions
  • Provides assistance to customers inquiring about or using the City’s facility; monitors facility rentals and classes; answers phones and directs the public.
  • Performs routine custodial duties such as sweeping, washing windows, restocking restrooms, removing waste materials and garbage, and spot mopping.
  • Provides direction and assistance in resolving rental issues, facility/classroom problems and emergency situations.
  • Monitors the facility during the duration of scheduled rental periods, scheduled classes or city programs; ensures compliance with all facility rules and regulations, anticipates and resolves issues quickly.
  • Opens, closes, secures and maintains a safe program environment at City facilities; conducts routine walk‑around safety checks.
  • Sets up and prepares tables, chairs, equipment, and supplies for programs or scheduled activities; assists renters, visitors, and instructors with equipment setup/function and general service requests.
  • Completes inventory of necessary program supplies.
  • Completes facility cleaning checklist during assigned shifts and notes items of concern to supervisor.
  • Answers program‑related questions and provides exceptional customer service.
Hours

Recreation Leaders will work both traditional and non‑traditional hours including weekends and nights. The workload and availability of hours for these positions varies throughout the year.

Experience and Education

Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Recreation Leader. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of one year of experience implementing recreation programs or events, and a high school diploma or equivalent.

Physical Working Conditions

Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. The position requires prolonged sitting, running, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, repetitive hand movement, climbing fences, and crawling under houses in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when performing investigations, operating assigned equipment and reading correspondence, statistical data and using a computer.

The need to lift, carry and push animals and supplies weighing 100 pounds or more, with the proper lifting carrying, pushing and/or pulling techniques to minimize risk, may also be required. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Additionally, the incumbent may be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
