Water Meter Reader I/II

The City of Lathrop is seeking an experienced Water Meter Reader I/II to join our team. Successful candidates should possess good communication and interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic, and a professional attitude. The position is customer service‑oriented and works closely with staff, residents and developers.
Responsibilities:
- Under general supervision, learn to perform and perform the full array of duties assigned to the Water Meter Reader series, including reading water meters, recording consumption, inserting data into hand‑held devices, verifying meter numbers and service codes.
- Check water meters for missing seals, glass, lights out and/or tampering, detect and report damaged or unusual meter conditions.
- Compare current readings with prior readings to determine accuracy.
- Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints in a courteous manner.
- Maintain hazardous materials and supply inventory.
- Conduct inspections of the facility and manage hazardous materials and waste per regulations.
- Perform maintenance and corrective actions on waste facilities and equipment.
- Participate in hazardous‑material and waste‑management training and professional development activities.
Essential Functions:
- Basic mathematical principles.
- Read residential and commercial water meters on assigned routes and record readings.
- Input data into hand‑held meter reading device.
- Verify meter numbers and service codes.
- Compare readings for accuracy.
- Identify addresses for new water utility billing.
- Work independently in the field with minimum supervision.
- Work with the public effectively and cooperatively.
- Knowledge of city streets and address system.
- Conduct daily/weekly/monthly inspections.
- Follow hazardous‑material handling procedures.
- Participate in training and obtain necessary certifications.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of experience in the maintenance and repair of water and sewer systems (for Water Meter Reader I). Two years of equivalent experience for Water Meter Reader II.
- Valid California Driver’s License Class
C. - Ability to walk 7–10 miles a day, lift up to 60 pounds, and work alone in varied weather conditions.
Training Requirements:
- Initial training: CA Title 22 Hazardous Waste Generator Training (4 h), Site‑Specific Emergency Response Contingency Plan Action Guide Training (2 h), HAZCOM Training (2 h).
- Annual refresher: same as initial training.
