Responsibilities
- Demonstrate clinical assessment skills by actively participating in planning of patient care.
- Complete and document direct patient care without supervision, including vital signs, intake and output, point‑of‑care testing, specimen collection, weights, venipunctures, and specified procedures.
- Collaborate routinely with nurses and physicians regarding patient care needs.
- Bring issues that could affect quality of care to the attention of the Clinical Nurse Coordinator or other management staff.
- Routinely and accurately perform basic triage functions, documenting findings on the triage form.
- Serve as a role model to new staff and assist others in completing triage functions.
- Implement physician orders, directives from the nurse, or departmental guidelines promptly, accurately, and with knowledge of the purpose of each order.
- Verify appropriateness of orders or guidelines before implementation.
- Act as a unit resource/preceptor and assist others in implementing necessary orders or guidelines.
- Independently provide treatments within scope, such as IV initiation, venipuncture, urinary catheter care (including Foley catheter insertion and removal), straight catheterizations, suctioning, and application of splints.
- Monitor cardiac rhythms, interpret rhythm strips, and document interpretations; notify nursing staff of abnormal findings.
- Actively participate in departmental operations, including use of voice and email to stay current on operational issues, coach or mentor colleagues, develop plans for operational efficiencies, and ensure readiness of the department.
- Ensure supplies and equipment are restocked, checked, and properly functioning each shift; intervene and correct deficiencies when discrepancies appear.
- Participate in formal quality improvement initiatives, education of new staff, and other areas of improvement within the department.
- Serve as a department liaison for EMS (air and ground) and assure proper transfer and monitoring of patients from pre‑hospital to in‑hospital care.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Transport patients requiring cardiac monitoring and report any changes in condition or symptoms to the responsible caregiver promptly.
- Perform central monitoring of telemetry patients, interpreting rhythm strips and documenting according to policy requirements.
- Monitor patency of peripheral intravenous sites and report complications promptly.
- Transport stable patients with drug infusions (e.g., nitroglycerin, cardizem, heparin, amiodarone) and report side effects or acute changes immediately to the caregiver.
- Recognize and report changes in patient condition that require activation of the Rapid Response Team, initiating basic resuscitative measures until the team arrives.
- Recognize and report changes that require activation of Code Blue, initiating basic resuscitative measures until the team arrives.
- Perform post‑cardiac catheterization groin checks as assigned.
- Conduct IV insertion, venipuncture, EKG monitoring, and interpretation.
- Report and document all findings to the appropriate caregiver.
- High School Diploma, GED, or higher level of education.
- Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
- Strong ability to communicate complex or controversial topics to a wide and diverse audience.
- Ability to work with a multidisciplinary team.
- One (1) to two (2) years of pre‑hospital experience.
- National Registry and/or State Certification.
- Completion of a paramedic program (providing course document or current paramedic card) under a national standard curriculum.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program.
- Act 33 with renewal.
- Act 34 with renewal.
- Act 73 FBI Clearance.
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but it does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
