Position: Nursing Assistant (Tuition Payment Program)

Introduction

The State of Delaware offers Nursing Assistants the chance to join a paid tuition program through a pre‑selected, accredited vocational school, paving the way to an expense‑free CNA certification.

Summary Statement

This position, under a Nurse, provides and assists with daily living skills, activities, and quality care for residents with intellectual disabilities. Duties include assisting with feeding, toileting, ambulation, visual observations, monitoring and recording vitals, implementing plans and therapeutic plans, ensuring safety and well‑being, and other related duties.

Essential Functions
  • Attends required classes including facility policies/procedures, nursing/therapeutic support methods, safety/security.
  • Receives hands‑on training, observing/assisting professional and higher‑level non‑professional nursing/therapeutic staff.
  • Monitors and records temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, nutritional intake/output and alerts professional staff to significant irregularities.
  • Implements prescribed treatment plans involving reality orientation, sensory stimulation, range of motion exercise, and application of splints/braces. Provides oral/written description of individuals’ physical/behavioral change.
  • Observes individual activities providing oral/written report of unusual/hazardous behaviour.
  • Observes/supervises individuals within facility surroundings ensuring appropriate location and security.
  • Escorts or is responsible for individuals traveling to social/recreational activities and medical appointments on/off campus.
  • Participates on interdisciplinary care team providing information about the individual's overall physical condition, abilities, and behavioural characteristics.
  • Applies appropriate interventions to prevent or de‑escalate inappropriate behaviours.
  • Assists individual with personal hygiene.
  • Maintains individual surroundings ensuring appropriate infection control and sanitary conditions, care/storage of linens and clothing.
Job Requirements
  • Six months’ experience in applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of nursing procedures such as monitoring or recording temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration and nutritional intake/output.
  • Knowledge of narrative report writing.
