Parent mentors are parents of children with disabilities who are employed by the districts to support other parents by providing information and resources to help their children succeed in school and transition from school to adult life. Qualification RequirementsA parent or family member of a child with a disability who is currently receiving or has previously received special education and related services through an IEP.Strong
oral/written communication skills. Strong organization and computer skills. Ability to work well with students, parents, staff, and the community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Communicating with parents one-on-one regarding parent concerns and/or needs
Supporting parents participation in meetings
Helping parents understand the policies, practices and procedures of special education services
Researching information needed by parent(s) to increase knowledge/aid in attaining services beyond school
Preparing/Presenting presentations to building awareness and understanding to parents, teachers, and community members related to disabilities
Preparing and updating informational packets for parents to be distributed by email, student delivery, mailings, social media and/or website postings to facilitate continuous lines of communication
Serving on committees as needed
Facilitating and supporting school based parent engagement activities
Coordinating with Parent Resource Centers and providing them with Special Education information and trainings for parents
Find resources for assist students/parents
Coordinating with other agencies/groups such as GLRS, Parent to Parent, Refugee Family Services, etc.
Attending required trainings for Parent Mentors Foster meaningful line of communication between home and school that improve attendance and overall student performance
Providing transitional service support that improve post school outcomes
Other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director
Position Requirements :
These required meetings are during the traditional school day. Must attend 2-day training annually hosted by GaDOE typically in early fall (August/September)
Must attend monthly virtual sessions typically 1 hour long hosted by GaDOEMust attend bi-monthly regional meetings
