Therapeutic mentoring fosters education and skill building, and collaboration with community resources, parents, and other service providers to enhance the youth’s stability. Interventions include supporting, coaching, modeling, and training the youth in age‑appropriate behaviors, interpersonal communication, problem‑solving, conflict resolution, independent living, and relating appropriately to other youth and adults while engaged in community‑based services.

Therapeutic Mentors provide direct care services to individuals who exhibit a need for behavioral support, skills training, and goal‑oriented interventions designed to assist with pro‑social skills development for youth, or with family‑centered skills needed to develop family cohesiveness. Interventions are provided in the home, school and community settings. Mentors are expected to take the lead in supporting youth and families through ongoing one‑on‑one, and/or group interventions.

Requirements

and Tasks
  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have experience with children, adolescents, and/or families.
  • Attend required training sessions.
  • Ability to deliver effective, evidence‑based, behavioral interventions applicable to individual service plans.
  • Be able to adhere to all program policies and procedures.
  • Be dependable and adhere to time commitments.
  • Be able to communicate regularly with program staff, submit progress notes, and plan and implement interventions that align with mentee objectives and goals.
  • Be available to work with mentees a minimum of three days a week, including after school hours and weekends.
  • Be willing to travel up to 40 miles.
  • Must be a licensed driver in good standing.
  • Have a clean criminal history.
  • Conduct 5-10 hours a week per client as identified in assessment.
  • Serve as a positive role model and support partner.
  • Provide effective guidance and skill building techniques.
  • Build positive relationship by planning and participating in activities together.
  • Build self‑esteem and encourage personal motivation for individuals served.
  • Assist in goal‑setting and set objectives for goal accomplishment.
  • Advocate for youth and their family to ensure identified needs are met.
  • Provide crisis intervention as needed.
Minimum Qualifications

Candidate must have a high school diploma. Must have an associate’s degree or some college. Must have a mobile phone and reliable transportation. Must have experience working with children, adolescents, and or families.

The Board of counseling may consider other degrees in human services or in fields related to the provision of mental health services.
