Job Description
Department:
Scotland Memorial Hospital – Emergency Department. Status:
Full time. Shift: Various (United States).
- 1 year RN experience in a hospital setting, preferably Emergency or Critical Care
- Current NC or Multistate RN licensure
- CPR certification
- Nationally recognized Emergency Medicine certification
- PALS, ACLS, and AEGIS de‑escalation training completed within 3 months of hire
- Preferred: TNCC (Tactical Nursing Certification), ENPC (Emergency Nursing Preparedness Certification)
- A. Demonstrates expertise in the application of the nursing process
- 1. Age‑Specific Competency
- Knowledge of human growth and development across the lifespan, enabling appropriate care for neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, middle‑aged, and geriatric patients
- 2. Family Involvement
- Ensures the family and significant others participate in the nursing process
- 3. Triage and Assessment
- Accurately triage and initiate assessments of physical and psychosocial problems within the emergency system
- Perform and document a comprehensive nursing history (chief complaint, health status, allergies, medications, past medical history, pre‑arrival treatment, and other pertinent information). This will be evaluated by random chart audit.
- 4. Nursing Actions and Interventions
- Perform and document nursing actions in accordance with recognized patient care needs, established plans, and hospital/policy procedures
- Administer medications (including IV fluids) following policy and safety techniques
- Accept responsibility for interventions in emergency situations, documenting actions and receiving peer evaluation
- Manage IV conscious sedation as required
- 5. Care Coordination
- Facilitate continuity of care through coordination with other healthcare team members
- Evaluate and document effectiveness of treatment, anticipate potential patient problems, and intervene in a timely manner to ensure safety
- Communicate appropriate data to physicians and document accordingly
- 6. Patient Dignity and Privacy
- Promote patient dignity and privacy throughout care provision
- Provide a calm, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patients and families
- Deliver care in a non‑judgmental and non‑discriminatory manner, respecting cultural diversity
- Utilize all information management systems effectively
- Implement teaching interventions as evidenced by documentation
- Demonstrate competency in nursing tasks with completion of competency requirements and skills checklists
- 7. Communication
- Maintain open and timely communication with emergency patients, significant others, and team members
- Communicate effectively with ED physicians, other nurses, attending physicians, team members, and resource personnel, following hospital policy
- Act as a liaison for patient and family, providing accurate and timely information and promoting participation in care
- Provide accurate patient reports to on‑coming shifts and to other care providers
- Represent the hospital positively in all interactions, including with the public and paramedics during radio contact
- 8. Safety Environment
- Demonstrate knowledge of patients at high risk for falls or injury
- Maintain a clean, clutter‑free environment and correct safety hazards promptly
- Use patient system consistently
- 9. Standards of Practice
- Develop new knowledge and skills via competency checklists and continuing education records
- Assist other staff with workload positively and adjust own schedule as needed for crises
- 10. Management & Leadership
- Assist in orientation of new personnel, teach procedures and techniques
- Delegate responsibilities based on staff capabilities and patient needs, reviewed via patient assignment records
- Function independently with little supervision
- Contribute to unit resource management cost‑effectively
