Job Description:

A.Charge RN Responsibilities
1.Assesses the number and level of personnel needed and assists the unit manager in maintaining adequate staffing for all shifts; notifying the House Supervisor at times when additional staff is required as well as when there is a surplus of staff.
2.Organizes patient assignments, taking into account the skill level of associates present each day. Distributes patient assignments prior to am shift reports.
3.Serves on hospital committees when relevant.
4.Directs and assists with orientation of new associates, making sure each new associate has an assigned preceptor.
5.Coordinates assignment of breaks and meals.
6.Serves as role model for professional nursing.
7.Leads and participates in Performance Improvement activities for the unit. Maintains knowledge of all ongoing PI monitoring.
8.Evaluates any patient and/or family complaints and ensures that appropriate actions are taken to resolve problems causing dissatisfaction or complaints.
9.Serves as a consultant to staff in clinical, technical, ethical, or professional matters.
10.Assists in evaluating the performance of each associate in the department.
11.Promotes harmonious relationships and favorable attitudes among physicians and all other members of the health care team.
12.Maintains current knowledge r/t Joint Commission Standards…complies with all Joint Commission Standards.
13.Complies with federal, state and local laws and regulations including abuse, patient’s rights and licensure.
14.Can perform duties of department personnel (I.e., RN, Tech, Unit Secretary) as needed.
15.Develops professional relationships with unit staff that will promote retention of staff.
16.Provides coaching to staff on regular basis that promotes growth and devlopment of the staff.
17.At all times maintains a positive environment on the unit.
B.Demonstrates expertise in the application of the nursing process:
1.Age Specific

Competency:

Staff members will have knowledge of human growth and development though the life span of the patient and have the ability to meet the needs of and provide care of these patients. The age categories to be included are:
Neonatal/Infant 0 - 11 months;
Pediatrics 1 - 12 years;
Adolescence 13-17 years;
Young Adult/Adult 18-64 years;
Adult/Middle Aged 65-79 years;
Geriatric 80+ years
2.Assures the family and significant others are involved in the application of the nursing process.
C.Triage and initiate accurate and ongoing assessments of physical and psychosocial problems of patients within the emergency care system as evidenced by written documentation:
1.Performs and documents an in-depth nursing history to include, but not limit, chief complaint, health care status, allergies, meds, past medical history, treatment prior to arrival, and other pertinent information. This will be evaluated by random chart audit.
