A Day in the Life
As an Aquatic Biologist, you’ll be responsible for assisting multiple projects where you will have increasing interaction with our multi-disciplinary staff, regulatory agencies and clients. You will be part of a strong team of committed professionals.
The compensation range for this role is $35 to $43 per hour, commensurate with experience, skills, and geographic location.
To thrive in this role, you’ll be comfortable taking ownership of the following responsibilities:
- Contribute to routine and complex biological investigations, specifically construction monitoring, fish and fish habitat assessments, and aquatic effects assessments (e.g., benthic invertebrate and aquatic ecology projects) in a field and office capacity
- Represent Onterris on project sites, when communicating with regulators, and internally to a wide diversity of technical teams
- Contribute to a growing and collaborative team of biologists and aquatic scientists
- Apply current scientific knowledge with accurate and precise field data collection
- Actively participate in maintaining the strong safety culture at Onterris

- Bachelor’s degree, or technical diploma in an environmental science or biology related field
- Eligible for professional designation in a relevant organization (i.e., P. Biol., P. Ag., etc.)
- 2-5 years of consulting experience related to aquatic science, and/or the environmental consulting industry
- Familiarity with pertinent regulatory guidelines is an asset (e.g., Environmental Quality Guidelines for Alberta Surface Water, Canadian Water Quality Guidelines for the Protection of Aquatic Life). Demonstrate knowledge of relevant regulatory acts (e.g. Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Impact Assessment Act, and Fisheries Act) as related to effects on aquatic environments is an asset
- Experience with aquatic effects monitoring on construction sites and industrial facilities
- Abilities in the areas of aquatic study design, field sampling protocols, and logistics coordination
- Experience in summarizing field activities and environmental information
- Excellent written communication and technical report writing abilities
- Possess a valid class 5 driver’s license with no driving restrictions
Physical Requirements
- Sitting, standing, and walking
- Lifting 50 pounds several times a day
- Overhead lifting of over 20 pounds
- Works in an office environment when not deployed on an emergency response
- Often works outdoors and may be exposed to hot and cold environments and extreme weather conditions, including sunlit, rainy and windy conditions
- May occasionally work shifts up to 24 hours in duration
