Science Safety Lead (SSL)
Location: Lawndale High School
Duration: July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2026
Compensation: $55 per hour, up to 50 hours per week plus additional hours for required training (minimum 11 hours). Hours may vary depending on training needed.
DescriptionThe Science Safety Lead conducts and maintains an accurate inventory of all chemicals stored in each building, chemical storage rooms, and classrooms, ensuring proper usage, storage, and disposal of all chemicals and lab specimens.
Responsibilities- Participate in training on handling chemicals and biological waste, organization and storage of chemicals, disposal techniques, and emergency procedures.
- Provide chemical safety training and support, including how to properly store, dispose, and review the SDS for each chemical.
- Keep a log of staff safety and hazardous materials training; maintain records of laboratory incidents and chemical inventory as required.
- Maintain Safety Data Sheets and ensure the binder is readily accessible to all employees.
- Inspect safety stations and first aid equipment; coordinate replacement and report needed repairs.
- Inspect chemicals and other supplies, annually update inventory, and discard leaking, damaged, empty, or unlabeled containers per protocol.
- Ensure teachers maintain properly marked chemicals.
- Segregate unused chemicals, maintain limited access, and display proper placards and warning signage.
- Conduct monthly inspections of chemical/hazardous waste storage areas and arrange removal and proper disposal of outdated chemicals.
- Coordinate and follow up with site department chair and maintenance for yearly disposal schedule.
- Use the district online inventory document to maintain the chemical inventory accessible to the science department.
- Conduct yearly inventory of all chemicals in each school building, including name, quantity, hazard information, and storage location.
- Know the storage, handling, and safety requirements for each chemical used.
- Submit monthly checklists to the Science Department Chair and administrators.
- Attend quarterly district meetings to report findings, progress, and provide input on safety guidelines.
- Maintain ongoing communication with the Science Department Chair, administrators, and teachers about hazardous conditions, disposal processes, and timelines.
- Uphold and maintain compliance with the CDE Science Safety Handbook and assist in updating the CVUHSD Safety Lab Guidebook.
- Valid Clear California Teaching Credential in Science.
- Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience.
- Experience working with and maintaining chemicals used in high school science classrooms.
- Organizational capability to ensure accuracy of chemical inventory.
