Overview
Position Overview As our Communications Assistant, you will play a vital role in advancing the visibility and engagement of the Department of Philosophy through strategic communications and creative content development. The role focuses on connecting the department with students, alumni, faculty, and the broader university community through compelling digital media and print publications. Students in this position contribute to departmental outreach by creating content for social media platforms, designing promotional materials, and producing the department’s newsletter.
The role also involves collaboration with faculty, graduate students, and alumni to highlight departmental achievements, promote philosophical education, and support community-building efforts that demonstrate the value and relevance of philosophy at KU.
70% Content Design and Creation
- Design promotional materials for events, courses, and programs using Adobe Creative Cloud apps
- Design email templates in Emma
- Create and schedule content for diverse audiences (students, faculty, alumni, public) across department platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram) using Adobe Creative Cloud apps
- Monitor engagement and track analytics
- Provide periodic performance reports with strategic recommendations
- Follow university brand guidelines while maintaining a consistent departmental voice and visual identity across all platforms
20% Newsletter Production
- Gather submissions from faculty, grad students, and alumni, conduct interviews, and write articles
- Compile faculty achievements, student accomplishments, and upcoming events
- Prepare newsletter for print and accessible digital distribution using Adobe In Design
10% Administrative Support
- Perform general office duties, including printing, scanning, and maintaining a clean and welcoming office environment
- Support special projects and events as assigned
Required Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications
During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.
Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).
