Job PurposeAs a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) with Heartland Community Health Center, you will provide vital preventive dental care, including cleanings, sealants, X-rays, and assessments.
You'll help remove barriers to care, foster trust, and create lifelong dental patients by delivering high-quality oral health services in an accessible, culturally competent way. Duties and ResponsibilitiesProvide preventive and rehabilitative caries control and periodontal services, including:
- Routine prophylaxis and topical application
- Apply SDF as needed
- Use ART technique to place interim restorations as needed
- Scaling and root planing
- Remove overhangs of filling materials
- Properly expose, process, and mount oral radiographs
- Polish restorations
- Use local anesthetic for procedures as needed and within scope of practice
- Promote an atmosphere of good dental and general health by demonstrating good personal oral hygiene.
- Educate patients on techniques of flossing, brushing, overall oral health, and the role of the dental care team.
- Clean and sterilize instruments appropriately and follow infection control protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Complete required daily, monthly, and annual equipment maintenance.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Perform applicable lab duties, including pouring and trimming models and fabricating trays.
- Remove biohazard trash as needed in accordance with established procedures.
- Answer patient inquiries related to pain and/or medications within scope and established protocols.
- Perform all duties in accordance with OSHA regulations and remain attentive to patient needs.
- Use appropriate safety precautions to protect patients and self while completing clinical charting and care.
Clinical assessment and charting responsibilities include:
- Document existing caries and restorations, missing teeth, and prostheses.
- Complete periodontal assessments including probing depths, recession, mobility, and furcation involvement.
- Complete head and neck examinations, including identification/documentation of soft tissue pathology.
- Properly make oral radiographs and take necessary precautions to minimize unnecessary radiation exposure.
Patient and community education responsibilities include:
- Educate patients on oral health maintenance and prevention, including brushing, flossing, plaque control, and diet.
- Educate patients or guardians on the benefits of fluoride.
- Participate in professional training from internal and external sources to strengthen skills and support integration of dental services in the primary care setting.
