Overview

The University of Kansas Upward Bound programs are federally funded TRIO programs that work with first-generation and low-income college-bound students (rising 9th - rising 12th graders) in Shawnee, Douglas, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties with the goal of increasing the rate at which students complete high school and graduate from college.

The Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute is an intensive six-week academic program that gives participants a chance to experience college life while preparing for their upcoming school year. Students share a room in a university residence hall with other participants and interact with instructors and residence hall advisors while taking academic classes.

The instructor for the Upward Bound Program Non-Bridge Summer Institute will develop and implement a content-area curriculum while serving as a role model for high school students participating in the Upward Bound Non-Bridge Summer Institute. Classes are scheduled to take place from Monday to Thursday, spanning June 8 to July 2, 2026. An orientation for instructors is tentatively scheduled for May 14, 2026.

The pay rate is $20-$23 per hour depending on qualifications. These positions are temporary summer appointments.

Open for the following Subject Areas: 2 Math Instructors (Geometry, Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Calculus or Statistics); 2 Elective Instructors; 1 Science Instructor; 1 English Instructor.

Job Description

50% - Instruction:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the project's overarching goals and contribute to a challenging program of study aimed at fostering success and confidence in each student.
  • Create and implement content-area curriculum and lesson plans from Monday to Thursday.
  • Identify necessary resources (e.g., reading material, instructional aides) for effective curriculum implementation.
  • Assess students' cognitive needs and design a curriculum to address those needs.
  • Provide opportunities for hands-on classroom activities.

35% - Administration:

  • Complete all administrative tasks thoroughly and punctually, including weekly student progress and instruction reports, daily attendance, and final grade reports for each student.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive student information.
  • Read and respond to all communication, staying updated on changes in schedules.
  • Attend required training before the program and participate in weekly staff meetings.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to undertake additional duties as assigned.

10% - Policy Enforcement:

  • Model and enforce all university and program policies.
  • Respond promptly to student issues, conflicts, mediation needs, and crisis situations.
  • Consistently document all policy violations.
  • Report inappropriate student behavior and/or policy violations to the appropriate staff.

5% - Other duties as assigned.

  • 60+ undergraduate hours at the end of spring 2026 semester
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a wide variety of students as evidenced by application materials
  • Subject area teaching expertise and experience as evidenced by application materials
  • Experience with Federal TRIO Programs and/or first-generation college students as evidenced by application materials
