Position Summary
Adjunct Instructor, Music / Elementary and Intermediate Keyboard Skills – Lawrence, KS. Responsible for developing and teaching college‑level piano courses, covering Elementary Keyboard Skills I & II and Intermediate Keyboard Skills I, for a total of 3 credits.
Responsibilities- Facilitate student matriculation in the following outcomes:
- Completion of associate baccalaureate programs
- Transfers to other colleges or universities
- Develop and provide course materials in compliance with university guidelines:
- Course syllabi
- Assessment and evaluative instruments and the data derived
- Textbook selection and educational materials for those classes taught
- Implement curriculum and assist in updating curricula to ensure student learning meets national, state, and local requirements.
- Access software applications/programs to report data for all courses taught with respect to:
- Learning outcomes
- Assessment outcomes
- Recommendations for instructional improvement
- Hold one office hour per 3 credit hour course per week to answer students’ questions and assist them in successfully completing courses.
- Submit grades on forms provided by the university before 4:00 pm to the Office of the Vice‑President for Academics; grades are due the Tuesday after finals week.
- Attend relevant university‑wide and departmental meetings, such as accreditation meetings, assessment meetings, and orientation for new faculty.
- Administer and return End of the Course Student Evaluations to the respective Dean, adhering to accreditation requirements for Haskell Indian Nations University in academic policies and other academic requirements.
- Teach an introductory piano course for students with no prior experience, covering basic keyboard skills, music reading, transposition, harmonization, improvisation, and playing by ear; also introduce basic features of the digital piano, major scales, chord inversions, secondary triads, and seventh chords.
- Teach an intermediate piano course focused on the development of keyboard skills, including reading, transposition, harmonization, improvisation, and playing by ear; instruction covers all major and minor scales as well as secondary dominant harmony.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum of a Master’s degree, a terminal degree, or an appropriate graduate degree in the subject matter being taught (except for Indigenous languages).
- Background check required.
- Clear communicator.
- Ability to teach with ample real‑world experience.
- Confidence in teaching and presenting to a class.
- Technologically savvy: can utilize email, various online learning systems, and other communication tools for students.
- Passionate about specific academic fields and education in general.
- Clear understanding of curriculum design, pedagogy, and learning outcome alignment.
- Ability to help first‑year students adjust to the university, develop a better understanding of the learning process, and acquire essential academic success skills.
- Knowledge of human communication theory and practice in developing speaking skills in intrapersonal, interpersonal, and public communication contexts.
