Job Summary
Peer tutors and Writing Center staff support the academic progress of students by identifying learning challenges and reinforcing critical thinking. They provide academic insight and develop study skills with students through one‑on‑one sessions in their respective areas of expertise. Please include in your cover letter the area in which you prefer to tutor.
Qualifications- Good conduct and academic standing with the college – cumulative GPA of 3.0+
- Sheridan College Student – currently enrolled
- Recommendation from an instructor and supporting academic documents
- Solid knowledge in the subject area
- Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated by effective oral and written communication
- Professional demeanor and the ability to work respectfully with diverse student populations
- Personable, reliable, confident and able to work independently
- Ability to creatively engage students in learning course content, develop study strategies, and demonstrate time management skills
- Willingness to learn new skills and prioritize on‑the‑job training
- Aptitude for generating positive learning outcomes from one‑on‑one interactions with peers
- Meet with students individually or in small groups, both face‑to‑face and online
- Integrate study strategies to promote independent learning
- Collaborate with other members of the academic support team and actively participate in training and staff meetings
- Keep accurate records of tutoring sessions, file client reports, and ensure sessions are entered in the tracking system
- Attend required training and complete assigned tutorials for professional development
- Support students with various learning abilities and generate referrals to appropriate campus resources
- Maintain FERPA compliance
Physical Requirements
- Tutoring sessions take place in Kooi Library, Monday through Friday, synchronized with the student’s class schedule. In some cases, tutoring can be remote or at another location on Sheridan Campus with the director’s approval.
Student position Peer Tutor – Department Academics, Sheridan College – 2026‑2027 academic year. Hourly rate: $12.00. Multiple positions available across a wide range of subjects including A & P, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Music Theory, Nursing, Computer Science, Mathematics, and Statistics.
