Position Overview
Chairperson-Associate or Full Professor, Department of Spanish & Portuguese, University of Kansas Lawrence Campus, 0.5 FTE administrative role with additional 0.5 FTE faculty responsibilities.
Responsibilities- Provides oversight and leadership for all unit activities.
- Administers undergraduate and graduate academic programs.
- Reviews and modifies long‑range planning for the unit in consultation with governance and faculty.
- Oversees all internal budgetary, administrative, and personnel matters.
- Supervises and reviews faculty and professional, academic, and University support staff; supports faculty and staff development.
- Seeks enhancement of unit resources by actively pursuing external funding.
- Develops and enhances research and educational relationships between the unit and other units across the College and University, as well as with external agencies.
- Develops long‑term planning for future leadership by cultivating/mentoring future faculty members.
- Executes College and University policy in the unit effectively.
- Represents the unit to CLAS and other University entities.
- Teaches courses, advises students, supervises graduate teaching assistants, and serves on committees evaluating student progress (20% teaching/advising).
- Engages in scholarly research, publishing peer‑reviewed books and articles, and presenting at professional conferences (20% research).
- Provides general service to the unit, College, University, state, and profession (10% service).
- Tenured appointment with the rank of Full Professor or Associate Professor in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.
- Demonstrated ability to serve as an academic leader and team builder, developing and enhancing research and educational relationships among faculty and between the unit and its affiliated units.
- Teaching experience at both undergraduate and graduate levels with a commitment to teaching excellence.
- Strong record of scholarly achievement, evidenced by an established research program with continued productivity.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and manage interpersonal relations, maintaining civility and respect among faculty, staff, and students.
- Excellence in administrative and management skills.
- Commitment to interdisciplinary and international scope in teaching, research, and service.
- Experience with KU and KUCR administrative procedures.
- Experience in seeking outside funding and managing multiple projects.
Limited Term, serve at the pleasure of the university, with a one‑year term and possibility of renewal. Term ends 30‑Jun‑2027.
