Reports to: Principal or administrator designee
Job Goal: Provide an effective program of instruction based on the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
Performance Responsibilities:
Student Instruction and Support:- Work with individuals and small groups to teach and practice English language skills in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
- Work with individuals and small groups to apply English language skills in the context of learning age-appropriate general curriculum.
- Work with individuals and small groups to understand cultural differences and explicitly teach social language skills.
- Provide guidance and be an advocate for culturally and linguistically diverse students in both academic and social settings.
- Build instruction upon previously learned materials.
- Consult with teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators to select and schedule ELLs into appropriate educational courses to meet their social and developmental needs.
- Develop and maintain current and accurate ESOL Student Enhancement Plans.
- Maintain appropriate documentation of ESOL instruction and services within ESOL Student Enhancement Plans.
- Monitor and document the delivery of both language arts instruction and content‑area instruction for each student in their ESOL Enhancement Plans.
- Model the effective use of ESOL instructional strategies in a variety of content areas.
- Model the effective use of strategies for differentiating instruction for ELLs.
- Model the effective use of the components of sheltered instruction and provide direct assistance to content area teachers to incorporate the components in classroom settings.
- Exhibit an understanding of second language acquisition theory and its impact upon the social and academic development of PreK-12 students.
- Demonstrate effective skills in reading, writing, math, and speaking as necessary for assignment.
- Demonstrate command of the subject matter for which he/she is assigned to teach/coordinate.
- Implement the district’s written curriculum and the state and district assessment program.
- Collaborate with teachers on the selection, use, sharing, and integration of books, equipment, and technology for English language proficiency development.
- Prepare for assigned classes and show evidence of that preparation.
- Utilize effective data‑based problem solving skills and provide evidence of individual student/adult learning.
- Provide for regular assessment of student/adult progress for all assigned content areas and reteach, adapt, and/or provide extensions based on the data from these assessments.
- Consult with school personnel in the delivery and analysis of assessments for determining the English language proficiency levels of students in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Collaborate with school personnel in scheduling and conducting parent/teacher conferences.
- Communicate with parents and/or families on an ongoing basis about student performance and to share information on available community resources.
- Consult with administrators and registrars in maintaining and monitoring ELL student records.
- Collaborate with school personnel in determining the eligibility of ELLs referred for special education staffing.
- Attend and participate in assigned staff/team meetings.
- Participate in workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced coursework which further knowledge of best practices in the area of ESOL, assigned content areas, and technology.
- Maintain state certification/licensure standards for teachers in the field for which he/she is assigned.
- Take necessary and reasonable steps to protect students, which include creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
- Demonstrate respect and value for all students and staff and maintain professional and ethical standards.
- Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect equipment, materials and facilities.
- Meet and instruct students/adults at designated locations and times.
- Uphold and enforce school rules, district policies, and administrative regulations.
Critical
