Position: Government Relations Director - Student Hourly

Overview

Position Overview Student Senate is the primary advocate for students on campus. Our 90 senators, 15 legislative officers, 10 executive staff members, 5 election commission members, and advisors work together to allocate about $24 million in student fees in ways that best serve students. We also represent the KU student voice within University, State, and National Governance, working to address and develop policy in students' best interests.

Responsibilities
  • 25% - Organize and plan the Spring 2024 Big XII on the Hill Conference.
  • 20% - Serve as a political liaison to the Student Body President, the Student Executive Committee, and the Student Senate on community, state, and national issues.
  • 15% - Attend legislative and policy-making functions of the following bodies, including, but not limited to, the Board of Regents, Governor of Kansas, the Kansas Legislature, the United States Congress, the Lawrence City Commission meetings, community and campus activist groups gatherings and any others as directed by the Student Body President, the Student Executive Committee, or the Student Senate for the purpose of gathering information.

    This will be done by attending city council meetings one a month, attending county commission meetings one a month, and once a month sending a newsletter/debrief of what has general been happening in Student Senate to the Kansas Legislature and the Kansas D.C. delegation.
  • 10% - Plan the Holidays and Higher Ed networking event in November or December for students to get connected with the KU administration, as well as local and state leaders.
  • 10% - Formulate a legislative agenda for the Kansas Board of Regents Higher Education Day and Big XII on the Hill in Washington, D.C.
  • 5% - Serve as an ex-officio, non-voting member of the Students Assembly and Student Executive Council.
  • 5% - Be responsible for other tasks as may be assigned by the Student Senate Constitution, the Student Body President, the Student Executive Council, or the Student’s Assembly.
  • 5% - Relay relevant information obtained from legislative and policy-making functions that is of importance to students to the Student’s Assembly by placing such items on the Issues Agenda of a Student’s Assembly meeting. This information shall also be relayed to the membership of the President’s Cabinet.
  • 5% - Direct and organize nonpartisan political education of the student body, by means including, but not limited to, candidate debates, voter registration efforts, get-out the-vote drives, voter guides, policy forums, and any other functions as directed by the Student Body President, the Student Executive Council, or the Student Senate.
Required Qualifications
  • Available on Wednesday nights from 5pm-10pm for Student Senate meetings.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with political awareness activities as shown in application materials.
  • Position Requirements

    During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.

    Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

    Employment Conditions

    (1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

    (2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
