Lecturer - Commercial Voice, Guitar and Songwriting Position Overview

The University of Kansas, School of Music seeks a full‑time, academic‑year (nine month), non‑tenured lecturer to begin on August 18, 2026. The lecturer will teach commercial voice, guitar, and songwriting courses, develop new curriculum, and engage students in professional musical practice. The appointment is a one‑to‑three‑year academic‑year contract, renewable based on unit needs, funding, and performance.

Job Responsibilities

Teaching (70%)

  • Teach up to 16 students each semester in JAZZ 100/121/221 — Applied Study in Commercial Voice and/or Commercial Guitar
  • Develop (Fall 2026) and teach (Spring 2027) a new three‑credit hour course in Songwriting
  • Additional teaching duties may include MUS 280 — Introduction to Music Production and JAZZ 409 — Jazz and Commercial Music Combos

Research/Creative Activity (20%)

  • Establish a research/creative agenda for artistic growth and a reputation for excellence
  • Participate actively in the cultural and intellectual life of the School and the University

Service (10%)

  • Work cooperatively in support of the School of Music and the University, including service on graduate and faculty committees
  • Collaborate with other faculty members
  • Recruit music majors and students pursuing other major areas of study
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in commercial music or related field, or Master’s degree in a related field
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a professional pop/commercial music singer, guitarist, and/or songwriter
Preferred Qualifications
  • Minimum of two years of experience teaching commercial music and guitar in individual or group settings, with additional experience teaching songwriting
