Position: SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST

School Psychologist

Positions available at various buildings and grade levels. Positions available on a full-time or part-time basis, depending on candidate preference and organizational needs.

Position receives an annual $7,000 related services stipend.

FTE: 1.0

Hours/Day: 8.0

Days per year: 188 (new teachers)/186 (returning teachers)

Fiscal year: 2025-26

Qualifications:

Current and Kansas school psychologist license or eligibility for the license; preferred:
National Certification in school psychology.

Reports to:

Director of Special Education and Building Principal

Job Goal:
As noted in Kansas State Regulation, K.A.R. 91-40-1, school psychological services include the provision of any of the following services:

  • Administering psychological and educational tests, and other assessment procedures; interpreting assessment results;
  • Obtaining, integrating, and interpreting information about child behavior and conditions relating to learning;
  • Consulting with other staff members in planning school programs to meet the special needs of children as indicated by psychological tests;
  • Planning and managing a program of psychological services, including psychological counseling for children and parents; and
  • Assisting in developing position behavioral intervention strategies.
  • Job Responsibilities:

    The school psychologist works with school teams and parents in a problem-solving model on issues related to student needs and school environments.

    The school psychologist functions as a resource to buildings and district-teams, students and families in the areas of: academic, behavioral, social, emotional and psychological needs and interventions; information and data collection and interpretation; developmental aspects of student functioning; childhood disabilities and how they impact student functioning; and special education law and procedures.

    The school psychologist functions as an evaluator of student skills, abilities and functioning within the context of the environment, and in response to interventions.

    Essential Functions:

    • Coordinates and manages the special education referral, eligibility, and placement process, including troubleshooting GEI/RtI systems to avoid inappropriate referrals to special education
    • Collects, analyzes, interprets, and reports academic and behavioral data to make decisions about interventions.
    • Provides support to students to promote social emotional well-being and academic success through check-ins, counseling/mentoring, responding to behavioral needs, progress monitoring, etc.
    • Collaborates with teachers and parents to advocate for the unique academic/social emotional needs of students and creates plans to address and accommodate those needs.
    • Provides professional development/coaching around academic and behavioral data to promote systems-side change

    Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

    Skills are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including pertinent computer software; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

    Knowledge is required to perform advanced math and statistical interpretation, review and interpret highly technical information, write technical materials, and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: psychology and educational principles; pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws.

    Ability is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups;

    work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities;

    communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of team; and maintaining effective working relationships.
