Position Overview

The University of Kansas, School of Music seeks to fill a full‑time, academic year (nine month), non‑tenured commercial voice, guitar and songwriting lecturer to begin on August 18, 2026. The successful candidate will primarily teach and will not have research or service obligations. This one‑ to three‑year academic year appointment will be renewable based on unit needs, funding, and performance that meets expectations.

Teaching

(70%)
  • Teach up to 16 students each semester in JAZZ
    100/121/221—Applied Study in Commercial Voice and/or Commercial Guitar.
  • Develop (Fall 2026) and teach (Spring 2027) a new 3‑credit hour course in Songwriting.
  • Additional teaching duties may include MUS 280—Introduction to Music Production; JAZZ 409—Jazz and Commercial Music Combos.
Research/Creative Activity (20%)
  • Establish a research/creative agenda pursuing artistic growth and expanding a reputation of excellence.
  • Participate actively in the cultural and intellectual life of the School and the University.
Service (10%)
  • Work cooperatively in support of the School of Music and the University, including service on graduate and faculty committees.
  • Collaborate with other members of the faculty.
  • Recruit music majors and students pursuing other major areas of study.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in commercial music or related field of study, or Master’s degree in a related field.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a professional pop/commercial music singer, guitarist and/or songwriter.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A minimum of two years of experience teaching commercial music and guitar in an individual or group setting, with additional experience teaching songwriting.
Additional Candidate Instruction
  • A detailed curriculum vitae.
  • A cover letter.
  • A portfolio with at least 3 examples demonstrating professional experience as a performer, songwriter and producer.
  • The names and contact information (including email addresses) of three references.
