Role Description

The Sr Packaging Engineer is a full-time, on-site role based in Lawrence, KS, responsible for leading the development and optimization of packaging solutions for Hill’s pet nutrition products. Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and engineering packaging structures, conducting performance and sustainability assessments, and collaborating with R&D, manufacturing, marketing, and suppliers to ensure packaging meets safety, quality, and cost targets. The role involves managing packaging projects from concept through commercialization, including timelines, testing protocols, validation, and documentation.

The Sr Packaging Engineer will analyze packaging-related issues, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and support global standardization of packaging materials and specifications. This role also contributes to innovation pipelines, ensuring packaging supports brand positioning, consumer experience, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications
  • Candidates should possess strong skills in Packaging Engineering and Packaging Design, including material selection, structural design, and performance testing.
  • Candidates should possess experience in Research and Development (R&D), including experimental design, data analysis, and packaging innovation methodologies.
  • Candidates should possess Project Management skills, including planning, prioritization, stakeholder communication, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Candidates should possess Mechanical Engineering skills, including understanding of manufacturing processes, machinery interfaces, and packaging line optimization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field; advanced degree is a plus.
  • Experience in consumer packaged goods, food, or pet food manufacturing environments is highly beneficial.
  • Knowledge of packaging sustainability practices, regulatory requirements, and quality systems is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in diverse, global teams.
