Under the administrative supervision of the Chief of Police, the Police Officer performs duties in the protection of life and property and the preservation of order in the City of La Cygne. The Police Officer enforces all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances in accordance with departmental rules and regulations. Patrol duties include enforcing traffic laws, investigation of crimes and accidents, and providing public assistance.
This employee will be required to exercise initiative and discretion when faced with emergency conditions. The Police Officer is required to work rotating shifts, holidays, weekends, and special events as assigned. The Police Officer is a non-exempt employee under FLSA.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for serving and protecting the public through the enforcement of all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances;
- Patrols city and issues traffic summons, investigates accidents, apprehends and arrests suspects, responds to emergency calls, and serves the courts’ legal process;
- Follows up on investigations occurring during the Police Officer’s shift for the City;
- Assists in investigations for both the City and County as needed;
- May meet with other area law enforcement administrators/investigators, civic, school, and business leaders;
- Serves as a liaison for the department to the community, conducts investigations, works with county attorney in preparing court cases; and, searches for, collects, and identifies evidence at crime scenes;
- Arrests individuals who violate laws and ordinances, and appears in court as the arresting officer;
- Investigates and intervenes in domestic disputes;
- Prepares reports;
- Operates all police equipment, including communication devices used to correspond with dispatchers;
- Attends all required continuing education classes, some of which may involve recent Supreme Court decisions related to searches, seizures, arrests, and other matters;
- Guards/transports prisoners, conducts interviews of persons by any means necessary, ships/receives evidence, and directs traffic as necessary;
- Enforce the ordinances, city codes and zoning regulations related to land use, nuisance, minimum housing requirements, health and safety, unfit and dangerous structures and other matters of public concern;
- Enforce the city codes as they pertain to animals in the City of La Cygne;
