Job DescriptionThe ESL Translator/Interpreter provides translation and interpretation services for school‑related documents, administers English Language Learner assessments, and communicates with community, parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators.
Essential Functions- Administer required English Language Learner identification and outcome measures to ensure compliance with state and federal program guidelines.
- Assist in communicating with parents/guardians about special programs such as special education and ESOL.
- Provide accurate translation and interpret conversations verbatim to maintain clear communication channels.
- Translate or interpret school and district information (e.g., newsletters, notices, parent‑involvement materials, flyers) for parents/guardians.
- Maintain contact with district personnel, parents, vendors, and community groups to support concerned parties.
- Monitor translation/interpretation services to determine adequacy.
- Provide parents/guardians with information about non‑school related resources (social services, health, community agencies).
- Solicit additional translation and interpretation resources for languages not supported by the district translator.
Experience: Job‑related experience required.
Education: Targeted, job‑related education in a foreign language or English. Preferred: college degree with study in a foreign language or English and a Kansas teaching license.
Skills: Ability to perform technical tasks, upgrade skills, read technical information, compose documents, facilitate group discussions, and analyze situations.
Knowledge: Basic math, reading technical information, composing documents, and facilitating discussions.
Abilities: Schedule activities, gather and collate data, use equipment, work with diverse individuals, solve problems, and adhere to district policies.
Work EnvironmentThe role involves occasional lifting and fine finger dexterity. Typical duties: 50% sitting, 30% walking, 20% standing. The work environment is generally hazard free with minimal temperature variations.
Clearances and TestingKansas Bureau of Investigation and Kansas Department of Children and Families background checks are required. Physical examination/TB screening may be required.
