Position Overview

Monarch Watch is an international organization based at the University of Kansas that leads education, conservation, and research programs focused on the monarch butterfly, its habitat, and its spectacular fall migration. The Student Communications Assistant will support communications efforts for Monarch Watch, including responding to email inquiries and phone calls, representing Monarch Watch at events and to visitors, developing content for various communication platforms, and assisting with other activities.

The Assistant will gain experience with a variety of science writing, graphic design, video and photography, and working with Monarch Watch team members, volunteers, and partners with diverse backgrounds, interests and perspectives.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to messages and donations via email, phone, and letters (60% of the time).
  • Represent Monarch Watch at events and to visitors (60% of the time).
  • Review, revise, and develop new content for various Monarch Watch platforms, including the website, print materials, and social media (30% of the time).
  • Provide support for other Monarch Watch programs and activities as needed (10% of the time).
Required Qualifications
  • Excellent communication skills, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Detail oriented with good time‑management skills, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Demonstrated experience with social media platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram, and You Tube, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and collaboratively as a team, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field.
  • Coursework in biology or a related field.
  • Past demonstrated volunteer, internship, or employment experience that involved writing, developing content, or design skills, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Past demonstrated volunteer, internship, or employment experience that involved interacting with the public, such as speaking at public events or responding to public inquiries, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or a similar application.
  • Interest in working with or around insects, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Position Requirements

    During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or be pre‑enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours, or be enrolled in summer session, or be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester.

    Student hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments do not apply to student hourly appointments.

    Employment Conditions

    Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by unit leadership and HR. This is an hourly/non‑exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non‑exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
